Among the group's best known hits are Pura Candela, Los Charcos , El Preso, Cali de Rumba, Son de la Loma, El Patillero, Tania, Charanga Campesina, El Arbol and Cachondea. "El Preso" in particular is one of Colombia's most widely recognized and beloved songs.
The Cartagenan singer Joe Arroyo joined the group in 1973 and performed with the group for several years before embarking upon a solo career. Wilson "Saoko" Manyoma (of Cali, Colombia), formerly of Los Latin Brothers, and singer of El Preso, was also an important member of the band. He has also embarked on a solo career. Some had said that, without Wilson Manyoma's vocals, Fruko y sus Tesos would not have that flavor of Colombian Charanga.
Ernesto Fruko Estrada began his musical career at the age of 15 when he joined the legendary cumbia group, Los Corraleros de Majagual. It was with Los Corraleros back in 1968 that gave Fruko the first opportunity to travel to New York to witness the city's burgeoning salsa scene.
El Caminante
Fruko Y Sus Tesos Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
voy caminando
alala lelele...
voy caminando asi
voy caminando
mi caminante va cantando mi cancion
voy caminando
alalala lele... yo voy cantando asi
voy caminando
ven caminando
caminando caminando
mucho fruko y mucho joe eh!
voy caminando
alala lele yo voy cantando asi
voy caminando
y mi cancion yo la voy lanzando al viento
voy caminando
alala lele. yo voy cantando asi
voy caminando
ven caminando
caminando caminando
oye colombia!

The lyrics to Fruko y Sus Tesos's El Caminante speak about a man who is leaving his lover behind with the intention of never returning. He explains that he doesn't need to explain where he comes from or where he is going because it was just the way life turned out. In the morning, they will be strangers to each other because he never stops, not in his travels nor in his love affairs. He tells her not to ask why he's leaving and that if anyone ever asks about their romance, to tell them it was with a "caminante," a traveler, who life brought to her.
The song is a melancholic but soulful representation of what it's like to be a wanderer and to keep moving forward in life. The caminante represents a figure who is always on the move, who doesn't settle down and who doesn't stay in one place for long. The song's protagonist doesn't want to be held down by anyone, not even by his lover, and he's willing to sacrifice their relationship to continue his journey.
