We Are Young
Fun./Jannel Monбe Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Give me a second I,
I need to get my story straight
My friends are in the bathroom getting higher than the Empire State
My lover she's waiting for me just across the bar
My seat's been taken by some sunglasses asking about a scar, and
I know I gave it to you months ago
I know you're trying to forget
But between the drinks and subtle things
The holes in my apologies, you know
I'm trying hard to take it back
So if by the time the bar closes
And you feel like falling down, I'll carry you home

Tonight, we are young
So let's set the world on fire
We can burn brighter than the sun

Tonight, we are young
So let's set the world on fire
We can burn brighter than the sun

Now I know that I'm not
All that you got, I guess that I, I just thought
Maybe we could find new ways to fall apart
But our friends are back
So let's raise a tab
'Cause I found someone to carry me home

Tonight, we are young
So let's set the world on fire
We can burn brighter than the sun

Tonight, we are young
So let's set the world on fire
We can burn brighter than the sun

Carry me home tonight (Na na na na na na)
Just carry me home tonight (Na na na na na na)
Carry me home tonight (Na na na na na na)
Just carry me home tonight (Na na na na na na)

The world is on my side
I have no reason to run
So will someone come and carry me home tonight
The angels never arrived
But I can hear the choir
So will someone come and carry me home

Tonight, we are young
So let's set the world on fire
We can burn brighter than the sun

Tonight, we are young
So let's set the world on fire
We can burn brighter than the sun

So if by the time the bar closes

And you feel like falling down
I'll carry you home tonight

Overall Meaning

"We Are Young" is a song by American band Fun featuring Janelle Monáe, released in 2011. The song's lyrics capture the desperation of a man trying to win back the heart of his ex-girlfriend. The narrative arc of the song is laid out in the opening verse where the singer apologizes for something he did to her before. However, the woman still seemed to be holding a grudge, just as the singer focuses his attention on the possibility of reuniting with his friend rather than reconciling with his ex. Later in the song, the chorus presents an optimistic note, calling for unity among the youth and a sense of liberation. The fact that the world is entirely on their side invokes a sense of power that's worth exploring.

One way of interpreting the lyrics could be that the singer is trying to come to terms with the breakup of his relationship. However, he is still hesitant to move on, and instead, he wants to try and fix the situation. He acknowledges that he did something wrong, but the apologies fall flat, and he's left with a sense of desperation. He tells his ex-girlfriend that she's the love of his life, but he's still young and scared, asking her to have patience with him.

Despite the sadness in the song's opening verses, the title of the song and the chorus bring a sense of hope and optimism. 'We Are Young' is a rallying cry to the youth to come together, embrace their power and strength and to set the world on fire. The freedom that comes with youth is a source of power that can lead to transformative change.

@user-cn8go7ky2r

@Jorge Rivas i can relate...
in the beginning of the year, i was getting bullied by these girls who i thought were my friends which they always claimed to be..
but they'd constantly hurt me leave me out of things and constantly make me cry..
i was too scared to make new friends so i didnt..
im still with that toxic friend group, and even though they claim to be my friend, and claim to care about me, they never said sorry..
to make things worse, i'd cry every night just wishing to be in my old town again, when i felt like people cared about me and loved me..
all those good friends from my old town are gone now, and worse thing was is that i never got to say bye..
they're a bit better now but like i said they havent told me they're sorry yet..

you never realize how good you have it until it's gone..
