Consisti… Read Full Bio ↴Funeral Suits are a 4-piece alternative rock band from Ireland.
Consisting of Brian James, Mik McKeogh, Dar Grant and Greg McCarthy, the band formed in 2008.
A shared love of epic, distorted guitars, blistering harmonius pop, art rock and electronica led to the band spending the best part of two years holed up in a disused office space in deepest North County Dublin, writing, rehearsing and at times venturing out to play as special guests for Franz Ferdinand, Passion Pit, The Maccabees, Local Natives amongst other.
More recently they have just recorded and finished their debut album with acclaimed producer Stephen Street (Blur, The Smiths) which will be released on June 4th (Model Citizen via PIAS).

We only attack ourselves
Funeral Suits Lyrics

Of the smoke in our grenades
It won't sting your eyes
And I'm gonna plan
Gonna go out and start a fight
I won't desert you
Anymore
You know, you know
And how come the sun don't shine on me?
Anymore
You know, you know
Don't be afraid
Of the smoke in our grenades
It won't sting your eyes
And I'm gonna plan
Gonna go out and start a fight
I won't desert you
La, da, da, da
La, da, da, da, da, da
Oooh
La, da, da, da
La, da, da, da, da, da
Oooh
How come the sun don't shine on me?
Anymore
You know, you know
And how come the sun don't shine on me?
Anymore
You know, you know
La, da, da, da
La, da, da, da, da, da
Oooh
La, da, da, da
La, da, da, da, da, da
Oooh
The song "We only attack ourselves" is open to interpretation, but one possible explanation is that the lyrics describe the feeling of being isolated and alone, trapped in a self-destructive cycle. The metaphor of smoke in grenades could represent the self-inflicted harm caused by negative thoughts and behaviors. The singer acknowledges their intention to start a fight, but they don't want to abandon their partner, suggesting they are struggling to reconcile their own problems with their relationships. The repeated question "how come the sun don't shine on me anymore?" could represent the loss of hope and happiness, a feeling of being stuck in a dark place where nothing seems to improve.
The repetition of certain lyrics creates a sense of urgency and desperation. The seemingly contradictory feelings of fear and determination could reflect the internal conflict and confusion the singer is experiencing. The chorus, with its catchy melody and simple lyrics, almost feels like a mantra, emphasizing the theme of being trapped in a harmful pattern.

Many people have their different interpretations of this song. I think that's lovely, so I would like to share mine.
My interpretation is someone who has suicidal thoughts and is trying to weigh both options.
"Don't be afraid of the smoke in our grenades, it won't sting your eyes." Is them trying to tell themselves it won't hurt, don't be afraid because you'll feel better in the end.
"And I'm gonna plan, gonna go out and start a fight. I won't desert you." I see this as the counter argument, I'm gonna fight this. I don't want to go away and desert my loved ones.
"And how come the sun don't shine on my anymore." I see this as the actual depression itself. Sometimes it feels like everything is hopeless. No one actually cares so why should I? All the bad things are pushing and pushing but there's no light, no hope, no sun.
"You know, you know." I see this as all the people who know how hard it is, but can't help. Even someone who has gone through the same experiences can't take the pain away, can't make it any better.
Physical and emotional pain pushes people to do things that most, "normal," people wouldn't think to do. When you're sick and hurting sometimes it feels like ending it all would be the easiest option. Especially when there is no sun to help you through the dark moments.
