Amsterdam
Funeral for a Friend Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Water broken voice
Saturates a microphone
Into a receiver with no tongue
Offering little to what it knows

Then a silence so heavy
Broken hearts fall from throats
Broken Hearts
When heaven is remembered but never seen

Through hearts
Through hearts shaped by kaleidoscopes

Through hearts shaped like kaleidascopes

Eternally the sun has set to mourning
And contoured are the backgrounds
On the canvas to which our lives are painted

Water broken voice
Saturates a microphone
Into a receiver with no tongue
Offering little to what it knows

Then a silence so heavy
Broken hearts fall from throats
when heaven is remembered but never seen
Through hearts shaped by kaleidoscopes

Eternally the sun has set to mourning
And contoured are the backgrounds
On the canvas to which our lives are painted

Water broken
Through hearts shaped like kaleidoscopes
Voice
Through hearts shaped by kaleidoscopes
Through hearts shaped by kaleidoscopes
Through hearts shaped by kaleidoscopes
By Kaleidoscopes The sun has set to mourning
By Kaleidoscopes The sun has set to mourning
By Kaleidoscopes The sun has set to mourning

The sun has set to mourning

Overall Meaning

The first stanza of "10:45 Amsterdam Conversations" describes a sorrowful, raw moment in which the singer's voice is "broken" and "saturates" the microphone. They are communicating with someone who "has no tongue," presumably a metaphor for someone who is unable or unwilling to respond. The singer recognizes that they don't have much to offer in terms of comfort or insight. The following line about "hearts shaped like kaleidoscopes" suggests that, even in the midst of pain, there is beauty and complexity, but that the complexity can be overwhelming and disorienting.

The second stanza takes a more abstract turn, with the sun "eternally set to mourning." The use of "contoured" to describe the backgrounds of our lives adds a sense of depth and texture to the image. It is as though our experiences are woven into the very fabric of the universe. The image of a canvas being painted suggests that our lives are ongoing works of art. Overall, the lyrics convey a sense of deep sadness, but also a recognition of the beauty and richness of human experience.
