Beneath The Burning Tree
Funeral for a Friend Lyrics

Carbon copy aftertaste
The taste of lips so delicate
Stop the click and watch the room
Sitting pretty in full bloom

Your stain on my fingers
Like a headache that the pills won't kill
Your stain on my fingers
Like a headache that the pills won't kill

Hold your breath this is the part
That I've been waiting for
Words spill out in front of you
On your bedroom floor

Your stain on my fingers
Like a headache that the pills won't kill
Your stain on my fingers
Like a headache that the pills won't kill

I sat beneath the burning tree
I never gave my world away
Maybe I should, maybe I could
I sat beneath the burning tree
I never gave my world away
Maybe I should, maybe I could

I never gave my world away
Maybe I should, maybe I could
I never gave my world away
Maybe I should, maybe I would

I never gave my world away
Maybe I should, maybe I could
I sat beneath the burning tree
I never gave my world away
Maybe I should, maybe I could

I sat beneath the burning tree
The burning tree, the burning tree

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Funeral for a Friend's song "Beneath The Burning Tree" talks about the aftermath of a relationship that has ended badly. The first verse describes the longing for the taste of the lips of a former lover and the inability to forget their touch. The second verse describes the feeling of anticipation that one gets during a confrontation. The singer is waiting to speak to their former lover and confront them, but as they do so, they realize that the person they once loved is not who they thought they were. The chorus describes the indelible nature of a past relationship as though it is a physical stain on the skin that can never be washed away. The final verse describes a moment of introspection where the singer contemplates the idea of opening themselves up to love again.

The song's lyrics are open to interpretation and can be interpreted as a song about heartbreak or loss. Some have interpreted the "burning tree" as a symbol of passion, pain, or release. The song's meaning could be about the singer coming to grips with their own emotions and personal demons as they reflect on their past relationship.

I miss FFAF. I started listening to them in 2004 when I was 12. Miss following them album to album, no two ever sounded the same. Some were better than others but now that they have been done for 6 years and I have gotten older, now 30, I have a deeper appreciation and understanding of everything they have released. They truly were an important part of my life and I do miss seeing where new sounds would take them.

Long live FFAF 2001-2016.

This album always had a place in my heart, even if there were an infinite number of moaners talking it down.
