Funeral for a Friend Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Dear friends of this academy
Romeo is bleeding to death
To see a friend bleed to death, what for
Some kind of metaphor that I can't see?
So I'll drink until I see it.

This sky will make me sick
So I'll give up on you
I'll give up on this
This sky will make me sick
So I'll give up on this
I'll give up on you

Archers in your arches
Raise your fingers for the last salute
And bleed this skyline dry
Your history is mine

So you want to hold me up and bring me down
Yes, you want to hold me up and break me down
I don't care for your sweet scent
Or the way you want me more than I want you
I don't care for your sweet scent
Or the way you want me more than I want you

Archers in your arches
Raise your fingers for the last salute
And bleed this skyline dry
Your history is mine

Archers in your arches
Raise your fingers for the last salute
And bleed this skyline dry
Your history is mine

It's all mine

Overall Meaning

The song "History" by Funeral for a Friend is a melancholic and emotive track that explores themes of detachment and disconnection from people and the world around us. Throughout the lyrics, the band seems to be grappling with feelings of disillusionment and frustration, struggling to find meaning in a world that seems to be falling apart.

The first verse references Romeo, a character from Shakespeare's tragic play "Romeo and Juliet," bleeding to death. The band wonders if this is some kind of metaphor for something larger, something they can't quite understand. The song then shifts to the chorus, where the singer expresses his distaste for the sky and his decision to give up on everything, including the person he is addressing.

The next verse speaks of archers in their arches raising their fingers for the last salute, almost as if they are about to embark on a final battle or enter into a serious altercation. The line "Your history is mine" suggests a kind of ownership over the past, as if the band is claiming it for themselves. Finally, the chorus repeats, driving home the band's feelings of disconnection and alienation.

Overall, "History" is a powerful track that captures the sense of detachment and disillusionment that many people feel at various points throughout their lives. Through its emotive lyrics and soaring melodies, the song offers a cathartic release for those who may be struggling with similar feelings.

Love this song. I grew up in County Durham which has the same mining heritage as Wales. Growing up in that environment, with all the old working men's clubs and council estates and all the drunken nights and girls and all my mates going off to uni, getting married etc... Just the perfect song to look at it all.

A lot of the music I listened to as a teenager has no appeal whatsoever for me any more - but this will always be beautiful
