She Drove Me To Daytime Televi
Funeral for a Friend Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Can't beat the best ones
A little closer maybe a bit too close
You function you turn out
A flawless performance

Turn your camera away from me
Spill your guts in 8mm
Put your focus where your mouth is
You're the only one who's fading here

Such holidays in the sun don't come without sacrifices
You know it makes more sense

I like the way you cry
Break my heart and break my hands and let me down
I want to snap your neck in two
And leave you dead, so dead

on and on and on and on and on (go!)...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Funeral for a Friend's song "She Drove Me to Daytime TV" may seem a bit cryptic at first glance, but upon closer inspection, they reveal a clear theme - the damaging effects of fame and the media on individuals. The song opens with the lines "Can't beat the best ones, a little closer maybe a bit too close" which could be interpreted as a commentary on the unattainable standards of perfection set by the media. The following lines "You function, you turn out, a flawless performance" could be seen as the expectations placed on people in the public eye to always be perfect and present a polished image.

The chorus includes the lines "Turn your camera away from me, spill your guts in 8mm, put your focus where your mouth is, you're the only one who's fading here", which further reinforces the idea that the media is a destructive force, and that individuals must sometimes sacrifice their own well-being to maintain their public persona. The bridge "I like the way you cry, break my heart and break my hands and let me down, I want to snap your neck in two, and leave you dead, so dead" can be interpreted as a frustrated response to the pressure and scrutiny of the media.

Still listening in 2018. This band helped me so much in high school. I found FFAF in 2004 when I was 15. It was a sad day when they ended for good but they’ll always live on in my heart and my ears 🤘🏻
