Get Off Your Ass
Funkadelic Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(God! I'm trippin' on that!)
Shit! Goddamn! Get off your ass and jam!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Funkadelicā€™s song ā€œGet Off Your Assā€ are simple yet powerful. The repetition of ā€œGod!ā€ and ā€œShit! Goddamn!ā€ convey a sense of urgency and frustration, and the command to ā€œGet off your ass and jam!ā€ is a call to action. The lyrics encourage listeners to stop waiting for something to happen and to instead take action to create change or achieve their goals.

The use of expletives in the song also adds to its raw and unapologetic tone. The line ā€œI donā€™t want nobody sitting down!ā€ further emphasizes the importance of action and movement, and the overall message of the song is to not be complacent or idle.

In terms of the musical style, ā€œGet Off Your Assā€ is a high-energy funk song with a strong bassline and guitar riffs. The song is driven by its rhythm and groove, which further support the lyricsā€™ call to action.

The song has been sampled extensively by hip hop artists. It was one of the two songs at the heart of Bridgeport Music, Inc. v. Dimension Films, in which the copyright in the song was held to be infringed when N.W.A sampled a two-second guitar chord from the beginning of the Funkadelic tune, lowered the pitch and looped it five times in their song, "100 Miles and Runnin'". Other artists who have sampled the song include:

Public Enemy, in "Bring the Noise", from the 1988 album, It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back and the soundtrack to the 1987 movie Less Than Zero, and in "Bring the Noise (No Noise Version)" from single 1988.
Tone Lōc, in "Funky Cold Medina" (written by Young MC) from 1989 Lōc's debut album, Lōc-ed After Dark.
A Tribe Called Quest, in "Rhythm (Devoted to the Art of Moving Butts)", from their 1990 debut album, People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm, and in "The Pressure", from their 1996 album Beats, Rhymes and Life.
Brand Nubian, in "Slow Down" from their 1990 album One For All.
The Genius (GZA), in "True Fresh M.C." from his 1991 album Words From the Genius.
Ultramagnetic MC's, in "Make It Happen" from their 1992 album Funk Your Head Up.
Tupac Shakur, in "Holla If Ya Hear Me", from the 1993 album Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z.

@PaulWarrenProject

It was Paul Warren playing the Lead on this song, I know - because I am Paul Warren. I was playing with Rare Earth at the time - who had the same management as P-Funk. I was 21. When asked why Eddie wasn't doing it - I was told he was in Jail for drugs. The track was already cut and my solo was an overdub. Clinton told me to just go, and it was done in one take. I used a 60's sunburst Les Paul, a Marshall stack and a Wah. I got paid $50 cash. My name is on the album under alumni.

LOL! I learned my lesson about that one. I was so embarrassed when a librarian tapped me on the shoulder and told me people could hear the music through my headphones. It's the bass and the beat; I gotta have it!
