Light Up Ahead
Further Seems Forever Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Take this heart of darkness
I give it all
And in all the emptiness
I refill it all

The times that I feel nothing
You bring enough
So I can live for something
You lift me up

And all these bad dreams
I wake up to the light
And when I can't see
I wake up to your eyes

Wake me up
There's a light up ahead
There's a light up ahead
There's a light up ahead (wake me up)
There's a light up ahead (wake me up)

Get so complicated
You live enough
Turn into what you hated
We're breaking off

The times I feel like nothing
You bring enough
So I can live for something
You lift me up

And all these bad dreams
I wake up to the light
And when I can't see
I wake up to your eyes

Wake me up
There's a light up ahead
There's a light up ahead

There's a light up ahead (wake me up)
There's a light up ahead (wake me up)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Further Seems Forever's song "Light Up Ahead" portray a message of hope and strength amidst the struggles and darkness of life. The opening lines read "Take this heart of darkness, I give it all, and in all the emptiness, I refill it all." This suggests that the singer is willing to surrender their pain and emptiness to a higher power or significant person. The next lines further affirm this idea of receiving strength from someone else, "The times that I feel nothing, you bring enough, so I can live for something, you lift me up." It seems that the listener or the subject of the song provides the singer with enough strength to find meaning in life and continue on.

The chorus "Wake me up, There's a light up ahead" repeats twice with increasing urgency. This could be interpreted as a cry for help or motivation from the singer, seeking to be reminded of the light that lies ahead in life. The following verse reinforces the idea of the subject or the listener being the source of the singer's strength, "The times I feel like nothing, you bring enough, so I can live for something, you lift me up." The bridge of the song takes a different direction, with the lyrics "Get so complicated, You live enough, Turn into what you hated, We're breaking off." This could be interpreted as the singer realizing that they are causing harm or becoming someone they don't want to be and finding a way to break free from that.

Overall, "Light Up Ahead" is a song about finding hope and strength in someone else amidst the darkness and struggles of life. It's a message of relying on others when one's own strength and hope run out.

I was singing this song the day he died, but I didn't know he died until the day after. My boyfriend and I were blasting the songs from this album last night and were tearing up. RIP. <3

Always found Jon to be the better of the 3 front men for Further Seems Forever. This album is truly an epic classic! RIP.

My favorite "Further Seems Forever" periods are with Chris Carrabba because he's the original singer of this band. But god, the "Hide Nothing" album with Jon Bunch is amazing too!!! RIP Jon Bunch...

I listen to this song, watching this video every other year or so and I always get emotional and my eyes fill up with tears. ...especially when the man sees his own birth at the end. It's such an encouraging song. We have this gift, this miracle of life, and each of us have a light inside of us. We may do things in this life that either shadow our light, or make it grow, but no matter what we do, it will never burn out. The bigger light is waiting for us to join Him and guiding us a long the way.

Thank you for capitalizing "Him." Not enough people do.

Just read that Jon Bunch passed away. Even with the beautiful music he wrote you never know what is going on inside someone's life or in their head.
