Qui tollis peccata mundi
Dona eis requiem.
Agnus Dei,
Qui tollis peccata mundi,
Dona eis requiem
The lyrics of Future of Forestry's "Pie Jesu" are a Latin hymn to Jesus, sung in requiem mass for the dead. The first stanza "Pie Jesu, Qui tollis pecatta mundi, Dona eis requiem" translates to "Merciful Jesus, who takes away the sins of the world, grant them rest." This is a plea for mercy and forgiveness for the departed souls, seeking a peaceful resting place.
The second stanza "Agnus Dei, Qui tollis peccata mundi, Dona eis requiem sempiternam" means "Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, grant them eternal rest." The reference to the Lamb of God is significant as it signals sacrifice, and here it suggests that it is through the sacrifice of Jesus that the departed may gain eternal rest. The repetition of "Dona eis requiem" in both stanzas further emphasizes the plea for mercy and rest.
Overall, the lyrics of "Pie Jesu" are a beautiful and powerful hymn that evokes a sense of calm and peace for those who have passed away. It seeks God's mercy and forgiveness, and ultimately, eternal rest for the souls of the departed.
