At the… Read Full Bio ↴Gérald De Palmas (born Gérald Gardrinier) is a French singer.
At the age of 10, De Palmas' family left Réunion, to live in Aix-en-Provence, France. At the age of 13, he discovered ska music, and became a fan of the UK band The Specials. Then he met Étienne Daho and formed a group called Les Max Valentins. But De Palmas was uncomfortable with this group, and went solo. After 7 years of writing and singing solo, Da Palmas won a talent contest on the French M6 TV network. In 1994, he released his first album La dernière Année (The Last Year), which contains the hit song Sur la Route (On the Road). He won a Victoires de la Musique award in 1996.
De Palmas released his second album Les Lois de la Nature (Laws of Nature) in 1997; during the same year his first child, Victor, was born. The album was less successful than his debut album, probably due to the dramatic change in his style. He was in the slumps for 2 and a half years, until 2000. That's when Jean-Jacques Goldman restored his confidence and wrote a song for him titled J'en rêve encore (I still dream about it).
De Palmas composed and wrote 10 of the 12 songs in his third album Marcher dans le sable (Walking in the sand). 2002 was the year he was reborn as a star, as he won the Victoires de la Musique and the NRJ Music Awards, while touring over 180 concerts. His songs even crossed the Atlantic, when Céline Dion sung his hit song Tomber (falling) in English, titled Ten Days. At the end of that year, Live 2002 was released on DVD and on CD, to commemorate his great tour of 2002.
Two years later, De Palmas returned with his fourth album Un homme sans racines (A man without roots), a more intimate album with less music, but still in the same melancholic style.

Étranglée par les sanglots
Sur un banc sans maquillage et sans phare
Elle s'est fait largué dans le métro
Circuler y'a vraiment, vraiment rien à voir
Et même si le monde vient de s'écrouler
On en parlera pas dans les journaux du soir
Il n'y a qu'elle qui le sait
Rose pleure, toutes les larmes de son corps
Rose pleure encore, encore
Ça me fend le cœur
Je détourne le regard
Quand Rose pleure
Quand Rose pleure
Rose pleure encore, encore
Ça me fend le cœur
Je détourne le regard
Quand Rose pleure
Quand Rose pleure
C'est pas permis ou c'est mal vu
On aborde pas les inconnus
Mais faudrait pourtant faire quelque chose
Tout le monde s'en fou, personne n'ose
Rose pleure toutes les larmes de son corps
Rose pleure encore, encore
J'ai oublié l'heure
J'arriverai en retard
Car Rose pleure
Car Rose pleure
The song "Rose" by Gérald de Palmas is a poignant exploration of a woman's emotions following a breakup. The opening lines suggest that things have gone wrong in her relationship and that she's struggling to cope with the pain. She's overcome with sobs, sitting on a bench in the subway with no makeup on, and with no guiding light to help her find her way. The singer suggests that she's the only one who really knows what's going on inside her, and whatever has happened will not be covered in the evening news.
As the song goes on, the chorus reinforces the woman's sadness, as Palma's heart is "torn" from her continuous tears. He explains that he avoids looking at her or sitting next to her out of fear, but he knows he can't stand by and do nothing. He is drawn to her because they have something in common - an appreciation of the healing power of tears. While others wait for the next train, Palma resolves to act and comfort her.
Overall, "Rose" is a powerful and emotionally raw song about the pain of a breakup and the universal human urge to connect and comfort those who are most vulnerable. Through his lyrics, Palmas encourages listeners to be brave and compassionate and to take action when we see others in pain.
