Manset spent his childhood in the suburbs of Paris (Saint-Cloud) and then in the sixteenth arrondissement of Paris. He failed his baccalauréat due to the degree of a failing grade in French.
In 1964, Manset was the recipient of the Concours général, and enrolled in the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs. The Salon d'Automne welcomed Manset in its engraving section in 1966. Manset's work was also shown at the Paris Salon. At the same time Manset approached various French advertising agencies with his drawings, without success, however.
Manset began to play guitar, but was also interested in the drums. He borrowed his sister's piano book, and began learning to play it as well.
In 1978 he released an album, titled 2870, equivalent to an album of Pink Floyd. Which never happened in France and will never happen again.
The mystery that was created around Gérard Manset was born from the rarity of his media appearances, the refusal of the scene (he never gave concert), and, above all, the uncompromising character of his work.

C'est bien une oraison
Celle du monde qui se meurt
Vous voudriez qu'on rie
Mais on se pince, on pleure
Sur le pas des maisons
Faites comparaison :
Ce qui est, ce qui fut
Le nature est amour
Or la nature a peur
C'est donc l'amour qu'on tue
C'est donc l'amour qu'on tue
Vous n'avez pas raison
Toujours il y a eu saisons
Qui se suivent et s'enchaînent
Vous n'empêcherez pas
Roseau contre le chêne
Que l'un plie, l'autre pas
Vous n'avez pas raison
C'est bien une oraison
Celle de la terre qui bouge
Viandes et salaisons
Ont vécu leur odeur
Lueurs affadies
D'une vie sans saveur
Où tout art est fini
C'est bien une oraison
Dont la méchante fleur
Distille le poison
Dont la méchante fleur
Distille
Dont la méchante fleur
La nature est amour
Vous n'empêcherez pas
Roseau contre le chêne
Que l'un plie, l'autre pas
Quand de toute façon
Brûlures ou glaçon
C'est bien une oraison
Dont la méchante fleur
Se penche
Se penche
The lyrics of Gérard Manset's song Oraison are about the state of the world which is dying and the destruction of nature. Manset sings about how those who want to ignore the situation and make light of it are wrong. He describes the scene of people standing outside their houses, pinching themselves and crying, as if they can't believe what's happening. Manset calls this scene an oraison, which means a prayer or a plea, and he suggests that it's a plea for the dying world.
Manset contrasts love and fear, likening nature to love, and describing how nature is afraid. He suggests that humans are killing love and nature, and in doing so they are also killing themselves. He sings that nature has always had seasons and cycles, and no matter what humans try to do, they can't stop the cycle of change. Manset then resurrects the image of the oraison, this time speaking of the earth as the one who prays. Manset describes the earth as moving, and the animals and people who used to live there as having lived their lives, their smells and spirits now faded.
Finally, Manset paints the picture of a poisonous flower, which is distilling poison. He reiterates his previous message that love is being killed and compares the unyielding nature with which love and nature persist, to the reed and the oak. Manset closes the song with the repeated image of the praying earth, reminding the listener that it's time to take action.
