1972 gründete Alsmann seine erste Band namens Heupferd Jug Band, mit der er drei Platten aufnahm. Ab 1977 studierte Alsmann an der Westfälischen Wilhelms-Universität in Münster Germanistik, Publizistik und Musikwissenschaft. Das Musikwissenschafts-Studium schloss er 1985 mit der Promotion (Titel der Dissertation: „Nichts als Krach: Die unabhängigen Schallplattenfirmen und die Entwicklung der amerikanischen populären Musik 1943–1963“) ab. Von 1980 bis 1988 spielt er in der Band Sentimental Pounders, seit 1988 mit der Götz Alsmann Band. Die Mitglieder der Band sind Michael Müller (E-Bass), Rudi Marhold (Schlagzeug), Markus Paßlick (Percussion) und Altfrid M. Sicking (Vibraphon, Xylophon).
Seit 1985 ist Alsmann als Moderator im Radio tätig. Von 1986 bis 1995 moderierte er die Professor Bop-Show, später Auf den Flügeln bunter Träume und seit 2000 Go, Götz, go! – Alsmanns Radioshow (alle WDR).
Seit 1986 ist Alsmann auch Moderator im Fernsehen, zunächst in Roxy – das Magazin für den jungen Erwachsenen im WDR. Unter anderem moderierte er von 1990 bis 1993 auf RIAS TV die fünf Stunden lange Livesendung High Life, von 1992 bis 1993 bei RTL die Gong-Show, von 1993 bis 1994 Avanti bei VOX und von 1994 bis 1996 die NDR Spät-Show. Seit 1996 moderiert Alsmann mit Christine Westermann im WDR die Sendung Zimmer frei!, die 2000 mit dem Adolf-Grimme-Preis ausgezeichnet wurde. Anlässlich des 50-jährigen Jubiläums des WDR moderierte er die knapp zweistündige Sendung Mit Götz, Maus und Melone, eine liebevolle Hommage an die "Helden" aus einem halben Jahrhundert WDR-Kinderfernsehen, worin sich Alsmann u.a. als Fan des Hohnsteiner Kaspers "outete".
Götz Alsmann ist verheiratet und hat einen Sohn, Max Leonhard (* 1990).

Götz Alsmann erkennt man an seiner Tolle. Er trägt sie seit seinem 15. Lebensjahr. Er wird ungern auf die Tolle angesprochen, gab dem Schriftsteller Benjamin von Stuckrad-Barre jedoch einmal zu Protokoll, zu dieser Frisur hätten ihn die Frisuren von Andy Mackay und Bryan Ferry inspiriert, die diese 1972 auf den Fotos im Innenteil des Covers für das erste Album von Roxy Music trugen. [1] Götz Alsmann gilt als Stilikone für elegante Männermode. Er erhielt Auszeichnungen als 'Brillenträger' und 'Krawattenmann' des Jahres (siehe unten) und ist in der Öffentlichkeit fast nur im eleganten Anzug mit Einstecktuch zu sehen.
