Coup d'état
G-Dragon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

People
The revolution will not be televised
The revolution is in your mind
The revolution is here
This is my coup d'etat
Hand's up, up, get high (high)

I'm so fly
Bang bang bang
도 돼 이 game 에 난 타 to the 짜
너는 사 to the 짜 절대 모르니까 fame

This is my coup d'etat (oh)
Hand's up, up, get high (high)

Bow wow wow yeppie-yo-yeppie-ye
I'm so fresh so clean
And my flow so sick

This is my coup d'etat (oh)
Hand's up, up, get high (high)

(Let's get on it) 머리,어깨,무릎,발 swag check mic check
Ay you want some, you want some more
It's not enough
Ay give me some, give some more alright y'all

This is my coup d'etat (oh)
Hand's up, up, get high (high)

This is my coup d'etat

Hand's up, get high

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Coup D'Etat" by G-Dragon ft. Diplo & Baauer present a call for revolution and change, emphasizing that it starts from within, in our own minds. The song is a bold statement of intent, a proclamation of G-Dragon's personal coup d'etat, in which he takes control and leads the way towards freedom and progress. The lyrics are loaded with imagery of power, rebellion, and aggression, as G-Dragon takes on the role of a leader, inspiring his listeners to join him in his revolution.

The opening lines set the tone for the song, declaring that the revolution will not be televised, but is already inside us, waiting to be unleashed. The use of the French term "coup d'etat" reinforces the revolutionary theme and adds a sense of sophistication and style. The chorus, repeated several times throughout the song, announces that this is G-Dragon's personal coup d'etat, in which he takes charge and sets the agenda. The lyrics also contain references to violence, such as the use of a boomerang, and to the thrill of being a fugitive or a rebel. The overall message of the song is one of empowerment and self-determination, urging the listener to take action and make a difference.

::In the first scene, it shows a barren land, which gives us a hopeless feeling. The lonely man kneeling on the ground shows GD struggling inside, troubled. It also show that GD feels empty.

Next, we see an innocent child looking up at the altar. The altar represents music and the child represents GD when he's younger. This means he believes in music like a religion. And then when he put his hand in front his chest (doing a pledge) it's like declaring music as his destiny. The ball swinging above his head shows that his life became turbulent.

Then when those mysterious woman wearing alluring red dresses with their eyes covered with glamorous red hats appeared, there's this red smudge on his shirt. This hints that GD had a few heartbreaks in his love life and he suffered. After that, that ball on top of his head started to swing more violently. He looked up like he was confused and furrowed his eyebrows like he's stressed.

Next, he appeared in that translucent room, where he produces his music (you can see those machines and his mic). Those shadows moving outside his room symbolize those people who don't understand his music, thinking it's crappy and hence judging him. The snow is a metaphor, showing how cold and hopeless he felt. Then you can see those boiling water in the pots. That signifies Bigbang that shot to fame, in other words, became 'hot'. He sat back, relaxed. The fire was yellow, and that represents the burning passion of his VIPs (VIP light stick is yellow) The pots continue churning and there are notes sticking out of the pot. This means he could "churn money" just by being himself. But he didn't become happy.

He sat on that chair and 'got struck by lightning'/electric shock(?)(they might represent limelight) He was exposed, and he winced continuously. It was obvious he wasn't feeling comfortable. However, he couldn't escape because his wrists were tied to the arm of his chair, so his movements were restricted. It's like he was lose his freedom and his life was controlled after he got famous.
Next, he is being shot at with free range bullets. GD isn’t afraid of the bullets and the bullets can't hurt him because after he got famous, haters don’t bring him down. The blindfolds adds to the fact that G-dragon can't see the critics, so he doesn't even flinch or try to fight back.

Next, GD is surrounded by reporters. They took pictures, scribbled on their notepads when they are blindfolded. And GD was simply sitting there, expressionless. This shows how he is numb to the reporters' inhumane ways. They don't allow him to have privacy. They don't see the 'real' him because they are blindfolded, but they don't really care. If they dig out some shocking story and get the headlines, it just means salary increase for them, so they truly find joy in destroying the images of celebrities.

He learnt to put on a mask (poker face) to hide his emotions and pretended that he is oblivious to his troubles. His face was often expressionless, but when there's no one around, he let his tear slip and be fragile. He wondered what happened to that young man who was so passionate in music. He felt himself turning into a corrupted idol, and that was far from what he wanted.

In the end, he threw that rock on the wall and the wall broke, light shone inside. This means he was no longer imprisoned. He crushed his mask, peeled off those stuff stuck onto his skin, it's like saying he tormented the pain and reborn. He went through metaphorical death because of the pressures in his life as an idol, he wants to start over again with rebirth and let it go.

Coup d'etat is G-Dragon's personal revolution ( the revolution is not televised, its in your mind)
1. The old man is G-Dragon ( as shown by his shoulder tattoo). His creativity has beconme old and tired, he has to tear off his old skin to reveal a new G-Dragon. In order to have new creative ideas he has to break through the barriers of his current artistic state of mind (throwing a stone at the huge wall and light shines through).
2. He is surrounded by reporters who are all blind-folded. They don't really care to know him for who he really is. They are blinded by their own biases. Now its GD who is blind-folded and being executed with bullets. Its the media taking aim at him, with their sensationalistic articles on him. He is wearing a plague mask and the reporters have turned into crows. The mask is to protect himself from the toxic media.
3. GD is cooking money. He is making a lot of money but he considers himself poor in terms of time (1 year 365 days Hong Gildong's mysterious skill- Hong Gildong is a famous korean novel character who has the magic to travel long distances in a short time. His phone is perpetually ringing)
4. He knows he's good (I'm so fresh so clean, I compete with the laundry, my flow's so sick), he calls out all the GD copycats (with my one song, you'll have to quit. In this game, I'm the professional hustler, you're an amateur)
5. The white tree is the tree from the Heartbreaker mv and the apples from Heartbreaker are now rotten. The GD from Heartbreaker era is over and he needs to have a new re-birth.
6. The white mask is the album cover for Heartbreaker, his first solo album. When he removes the mask, he is a demon underneath, showing that he is being portrayed in the media as being evil right from his first album.
7. GD is inside a ticket booth with a label 'Shine A light' which is his first solo concert based on Heartbreaker. Then GD is in a dressing room being electrocuted. This refers to the scandal regarding his Breathe performance where people attacked him that it was too sexual. Allso the alleged Flo Rida plagiarism scandal. Flo Rida publically announced that there was no plagiarism and he and GD performed together at FR's concert.
8. Because of these scandals, there were vicious petitions by knetz for 21 y.o. GD to commit suicide. This ties in with the black tears raining down the white Heartbreaker mask which showed the black demon GD crushing the Heartbreaker mask.
