When Gillum was in the first grade, his mother left his father, an associate professor of art at CSU Fresno. Gillum moved in with his grandparents in Berkeley, California, where he attended Berkeley High School. They later moved to North Oakland, although Gillum continued to attend school in Berkeley. Gillum attended Loyola University New Orleans, where he graduated with a BA in music industry studies in 2011.
Starting out as a record producer, G-Eazy began working on singles while he was still a student at the Loyola University at New Orleans with his producer Christoph Andersson who also was a student there.[4][5] He gained some recognition for being a part of the new hip hop scene back in the East Bay Area, joining with such artists as Lil B, Crohn and The Cataracs.[6][7] He became a member of a local hip hop group called "The Bay Boyz", who had released several songs on their Myspace page.[8]

The lyrics to G-Eazy's song "Mercedes Benz" convey a sense of arrogance and self-assuredness. The opening lines translate to, "I look up in the sky, there is an extra star, but I have never forgotten what you did." This suggests that the singer is reflecting on past experiences and feeling a sense of superiority or indifference towards someone who wronged them. The verse goes on to mention a Mercedes Benz on a square, covered in gold, and guarded. This imagery adds to the idea of opulence and extravagance, reinforcing the image of the singer's affluence and success.
The lyrics also touch on the theme of change and the singer's indifference towards it. They mention changing homes and women, but not changing a brother. This could imply that the singer values loyalty and kinship above material possessions or temporary relationships. The verse also mentions encounters with the police, possibly highlighting the singer's rebellious or nonconformist nature.

Oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends
So Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz
[Verse 1: G-Eazy]
All black leather seats, that's luxury
Riding doing drugs in her Porsche, that's gluttony
The rich girl that takes it all for granted, acts upiddy
She never knew about hard work, that's fuckery
Swear I got to college and I felt so out of place
Cause everyone around me had their parents dough to waste
To blow it on appearance, they just let it go to waste
They party on the beach, scene their pictures shown their face
Its so superficial but I want it all the same too
Limelight, you probably feel the same I don't blame you
I admit I want the kind of dough that might change you
Dreams of being on my way, I woke up when it came true
Soon as I'm rich Ima cop a set of keys
And fit it to a whip manufactured over seas
Believe that he earns every dollar that he spends
All my friends drive Porsches I gotta make amends
[Hook: Janis Joplin]
Oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends
So Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz
[Verse 2]
But I'll probably never fit that mold
Who else could ever flip this and make it sound like gold
Blow the dust off a record four decades old
Bridge the gap between cultures, made this shit sound cold
And all the moms love me now for samplin' Joplin
Im stickin' with my team, Im the rap John Stockton
I've been workin', playin' shows from Atlanta to Austin
They put me on the bill and all the rich hoes flocked in
I made this shit myself while you rap on a friends beat
I work my ass off just and I'm just making my ends meet
I cover mad ground like I'm running with ten feet
And Ima keep grinding till I sit on a Benz seat
Soon as Im rich Ima cop a set of keys
And fit it to a whip manufactured over seas
Believe that he earns every dollar that he spends
Ima blow it like the wind, Ima cop a fuckin' Benz
[Hook: Janis Joplin]
