The Way It Is
G.SOM Lyrics

Uh
Ha-ha
Mm
Look
The ones that look like me, look like 3, hate Mr. G the most
Ese to the folks, can't mess with me how it go
Snowball to the vatos
Too light too dark how it is, what it is
That's what it be, it's what it is, deal with it
Mm, mm
One side hate the double R's
Other side see me as the type to ride bumper cars
Clap when it stop-
When we ain't even been to Mars
Can't use my native tongue or my second, get laughed at
Real tejano wait, only half that
Still whiter than a lab rat, backtrack
Wasn't never in the hood
Wasn't never in a mansion, but I can't find the middle ground how to act
I'm American, but don't get too attached
Still Latino, but I got to be proper "it's Latinx"
Running two tracks like I got four legs already
"But I done liked grape juice for a minute!"
"Well now you black"
I see
What it be how it is, yeah it is what it is
It just be what it is
What it be how it is, yeah it is what it is
It just be what it is
Like one thing, you change colors
Random girl telling me to be offended, but I ain't even bothered
Put on ripped denim and a Polo collar
Then switch to khakis and designer worth a hundred dollars
See the liquor stores on corners, see the aesthetic home hoarders
See the trap-houses and rat-dousin'
50 primos in one crib, then the fat cows and,
See the Bentleys and the shotguns and the bass pro shops
See the bucktoothed, the abused but still hearing about tax or stocks
See two ends, two stories
Grab your socks 'fore they fly away, like an apple to a doctor
I done seen copters and be unamazed
I done seen cop cars a thousand times, but always still fazed
Yeah
What it be how it is, yeah it is what it is
It just be what it is
What it be how it is, yeah it is what it is
It just be what it is
What it be how it is, yeah it is what it is
It just be what it is
What it be how it is, yeah it is what it is
It just be what it is (Uh, yeah)
What it be how it is, yeah it is what it is
It just be what it is
What it be how it is, yeah it is what it is
It just be what it is
What it be how it is, yeah it is what it is
It just be what it is
What it be how it is, yeah it is what it is
It just be what it is
It is what it is
In "The Way It Is," G.SOM explores the complexities and contradictions of identity and cultural belonging. The song begins with G.SOM acknowledging the tension he faces from different sides of his identity, referencing the people who look like him but hate him the most and the difficulty of finding a middle ground between his Latino and American heritage. He expresses frustration with the way people perceive him and criticizes the tendency to judge others based on surface-level characteristics like race or appearance. Through lines like "it just be what it is," G.SOM seems to be resigning himself to the fact that life is hard and that he cannot fully control how others perceive him.
The song also touches on themes of socioeconomic inequality and the struggle to navigate different cultural spaces. G.SOM contrasts the liquor stores and trap houses he sees in the "hood" with the Bentleys and bass pro shops he sees on the other side of town. He references the difficulty of reconciling the two and expresses a sense of being caught between two worlds. Ultimately, the song seems to suggest that despite these challenges, G.SOM is determined to live life on his terms and embrace his identity, regardless of others' opinions.
