Dutton, born in Philadelphia, began playing guitar at age 8. He wrote his first song by the time he was in the 9th grade and began playing harmonica in a wire rack. Dutton credits Bob Dylan and John Hammond Jr., as well as then-contemporary "old school" hip-hop sounds of Run-DMC, the Beastie Boys, and Philadelphia's own Schooly D as influences.
Dutton, still in high school at Germantown Friends School, began playing solo on the streets of Philadelphia. After a year of college, he relocated to Boston, working as a fundraiser for Peace Action and playing wherever and whenever he could. One of his few indoor gigs at this time was a Boston bar called The Tam O'Shanter, where he met drummer Jeffrey "The Houseman" Clemens in January 1993. Dutton and Clemens began working as a duo, they were joined a few months later by bassist Jim "Jimi Jazz" Prescott and became the house band on Mondays at The Plough and Stars in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
The name G. Love doesn't really have that much of a story to it. The 'G' stands for Good as said in many radio interviews. He said in an interview that the 'Love' was just there because it sounded right.
G. Love featured Jack Johnson on his 1999 LP Philadelphonic playing an early version of Jack Johnson's "Rodeo Clowns" when Jack was an unknown artist. Jack later featured the song on his 2003 LP On and On.
Known nowadays for his excellent live shows, he is often seen touring with Jack Johnson, who signed G. Love to his record label Brushfire Records. He has made appearances on the records of artists such as Slightly Stoopid and Donavon Frankenreiter.

I'm going fishing 'bout a quarter to nine
I see my lil lady and she looks so fine
Aw my lines so tight
I figure tonight I'm gonna get a lucky bite singing
*All the fishes love me
I love all the fishes
But I can't get you off my mind
Singing Hey....
I'm going fishin about a quarter of eight
Now come on pretty momma don't you make me wait
Something's tugging on the end of my worm.
I been fried and I've been burned singin
*repeat
I'm going fishing 'bout a quarter to six
I'm a find a lil lady put her up in the mix.
The finest fish that I ever seen
Is the fish in the back of my limousine.
She looks so fine all the time
The kind of fish I'm gonna keep on the line singin
*repeat
The lyrics of G. Love's "Fishing Song" describe a man's love of fishing and his pursuit of catching the perfect fish. It opens with the singer announcing his desire to go fishing and spotting his lover who looks lovely. He sings, "All the fishes love me, they all wanna jump on the end of my line; I love all the fishes, but I can't get you off my mind," expressing his admiration for the woman even when he is out to catch fish. The chorus is catchy and speaks of the singer's love for fishing and his desires to catch the best fish.
In the second verse, he implores his lover to join him, as he prepares to hit the water again. He sings about a tug on his worm and how he has been both burned and fired, probably implying that he has been unlucky in the past. The chorus remains the highlight of the song with its singalong quality and ability to convey the singer's love for fishing.
The third verse brings a surprise when the singer says he is going to find a lady and put her in the mix. The fine fish he has ever seen is right there, in the back of his limousine. The singer sings praises for the lady and declares that he is going to keep her on the line. The song repeats the catchy chorus to end on a high note, which is not just about fishing but also about the singer's love for the beautiful woman.
