Dutton, born in Philadelphia, began playing guitar at age 8. He wrote his first song by the time he was in the 9th grade and began playing harmonica in a wire rack. Dutton credits Bob Dylan and John Hammond Jr., as well as then-contemporary "old school" hip-hop sounds of Run-DMC, the Beastie Boys, and Philadelphia's own Schooly D as influences.
Dutton, still in high school at Germantown Friends School, began playing solo on the streets of Philadelphia. After a year of college, he relocated to Boston, working as a fundraiser for Peace Action and playing wherever and whenever he could. One of his few indoor gigs at this time was a Boston bar called The Tam O'Shanter, where he met drummer Jeffrey "The Houseman" Clemens in January 1993. Dutton and Clemens began working as a duo, they were joined a few months later by bassist Jim "Jimi Jazz" Prescott and became the house band on Mondays at The Plough and Stars in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
The name G. Love doesn't really have that much of a story to it. The 'G' stands for Good as said in many radio interviews. He said in an interview that the 'Love' was just there because it sounded right.
G. Love featured Jack Johnson on his 1999 LP Philadelphonic playing an early version of Jack Johnson's "Rodeo Clowns" when Jack was an unknown artist. Jack later featured the song on his 2003 LP On and On.
Known nowadays for his excellent live shows, he is often seen touring with Jack Johnson, who signed G. Love to his record label Brushfire Records. He has made appearances on the records of artists such as Slightly Stoopid and Donavon Frankenreiter.

Send it, I pray
How can I keep loving you
Only when you're so far, far away?
Ooh, send me your kisses
Why don't you send it, my dear
So I can hold you
Why don't you send me your kisses?
Honey, I can feel that great love
I need you so bad
I miss you, you so much
My, my days are so lonely
Honey, my nights, nights are so blue
I'm here and I'm lonely
I'm waitin' for you now, all my, all night long
The song "Lovin' Me" by G. Love is essentially a plea from the singer to his lover to send him some affection, as he is feeling lonely and missing her deeply. The use of "send me some lovin'" repeated twice shows the desperation of the singer's need for his partner's love even from afar. The lines "How can I keep loving you only when you're so far, far away?" express the difficulty of maintaining love in a long-distance relationship when physical touch is impossible.
The singer further requests "send me your kisses", as he yearns to feel close to his partner despite the distance. The line "so I can hold you and pretend, yeah, you are here" emphasizes the power of imagination in imagining physical touch, which can temporarily ease the pain of separation. The repetition of the line "Why don't you send me your kisses?" emphasizes how much the singer needs the affection to cope with the loneliness he feels.
The song's chorus emphasizes the singer's need for his lover's love, as he declares that he feels her great love but needs it even more when she is not around. The line "I miss you, you so much" is a simple and clear expression of love and longing.
Overall, the song is an emotional expression of a long-distance relationship's struggles and the importance of affection in keeping the relationship strong.
