Rodeo Clowns
G. Love & Special Sauce Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yo, what's up?

This is G-Love coming at you live out here from California,
Even though I'm Philly born and bred

And I got my man Jack Johnson in the studio today, we just got out of the surf
My man, Jack, tell 'em what time it is
(uh, com 'on)

Sweepin' the floors
Open up the doors yeah
Turn on the lights
Gettin' ready for the night
Nobody's romancin'
Cause it's too early for dancin'
But here comes the music

Bright lights flashin'
To cover of your liquor
So many people, so many powers,
So many reasons to buy another round
Drink it down
Just another night on the town

With the big man, money man
Better than the other man
He got the plan with the million dollars
Give a damn but
When nobody understands
He'll become a smaller man
The bright lights keep flashing
Man the women keep on dancin'
With the clowns yeah, yeah, yeah
Pick me up when I'm down yeah, yeah
Rodeo Clowns yeah, yeah, yeah
Pick me up when I'm down, yeah, yeah

The disco ball spinning
All the music and the women
And the shots of tequila
Man they'll say that they need ya
But what they really need
Is just a little room to breathe

Teeny bopping disco queen
She barely understands her dreams
Of belly button rings
And other kinds of things
Symbolic of change
But the thing that is strange
Is that changes occurred
And now she's just a part of the herd yeah, yeah, yeah
Man I thought that you heard yeah, yeah
The changes occur yeah, yeah, yeah
She's just a part of the herd yeah, yea

Lights out shut down
Late night wet ground
You walk by, look at him but he can't look at you yeah
You might feel pity but he only feels the ground because
You understand moods
But he only knows let down
By the corner there's another one
Reaching out a hand
Coming from a broken man
Well you try to live
But he's done trying
He's not dead but definitely dying

With the rest of the clowns yeah, yeah, yeah

With the rest of the clowns yeah, yeah, yeah

The Rodeo clowns yeah, yeah
Pick me up when I'm down

The Rodeo clowns yeah, yeah
Pick me up when I'm down

Sweeping the floors
Open up the doors yeah
Turn on the lights
Getting ready for the night
Nobody's romancing

Cause it's too early for dancin'
But here comes the music

Overall Meaning

"Rodeo Clowns" by G. Love & Special Sauce featuring Jack Johnson is a track that talks about the realities of nightlife in a metaphorical way. The song is about a club where everyone is drinking and dancing, but some people are there for more than just fun. The “big man, money man” is a metaphor for someone who is powerful and wealthy, but deep down inside, he is unfulfilled and feels small. The bright lights represent the type of attention and recognition that money sometimes can't buy. The chorus repeats the phrase "Rodeo Clowns" to signify the people who try to find comfort in each other's company because they feel lost and broken.

The song's verse talks about a girl who desires to be different from the rest, but eventually conforms to the norms of society. The lyrics "The disco ball spinning, all the music and the women/ And the shots of tequila, Man, they'll say that they need ya/ But what they really need Is just a little room to breathe" suggest that people often pretend to be happy in a club environment but are really struggling to find their own identity.

The final verse of the song is about a homeless man who panhandles on the street corner. The lyrics discuss the idea that the people who beg for money are "just a part of the herd," and it highlights the problem of homelessness, poverty, and abandonment in society. The chorus repeats the phrase "Pick me up when I'm down" to show that everyone needs help at some point, and we must look out for each other in times of need.

One of the best songs of the era. And a highly underrated band.

Jason Lucas

EARTH SUCKS

He puts on 1 helluva live show too

ohgeereadmore

@EARTH SUCKS Saw them play at Cornell University in 96. They play live as a band in the studio so it was just like that. Probably the most stoned I’ve ever been at a show and that’s saying something

Jense van Wieren

@ohgeereadmore hell yeah dude

Puklej chleba

20 years gone like the reefer, still one of the best!

IceyOne

I remember going to a Jack Johnson concert right when Brushfire Fairytales came out,  and he was opening for Ben Harper, and I remember hearing Jack and wondering why he sounded so familiar. Then he played Rodeo Clowns and me and my friend looked at eachother and yelled "Hell yeah, G. Love!" Love this song.

Devery Shepardson

I have seen G Love and Special Sauce many times and they are always great. The first time I was at The Crystal Ballroom in Portland, Or, and it was 3 and a half hours of pure amazement they were on fire. It culminated with me passing him a joint and him smoking and reciprocating. A truly amazing time!

Jack Bray

I went to see him here in Seattle, oh, must've been 10 years ago now. I was outside the venue getting stoned before the show; this taxi pulls up and G. Love gets out. I smiled and nodded to him, he smiled back and tipped his hat as he walked right in the front door. Not another soul noticed him. Couldn't believe how cool he was.

C Lindley

Thanks G for turning me on to Jack Johnson.. And thanks to my homie Natedogg for turning me on to G. He ordered this album direct from philidelphonic, still got the book of matches and everything. We jammed this disc hard 99-02
