Moonlight
G. Miller Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Pour in the blue of a June night and one guitar
Mix in a couple of dreamers and there you are
Lovers hail the Moonlight Cocktail
Now add a couple of flowers, a drop of dew
Stir for a couple of hours 'til dreams come true
Adds to the number of kisses, it's up to you
Cool it in the summer breeze
Serve it in the starlight underneath the trees
You'll discover tricks like these
Are sure to make your Moonlight Cocktail please
Follow the simple directions and they will bring
Life of another complexion where you'll be king
You will awake in the morning and start to sing
Moonlight Cocktails are the thing
Follow the simple directions and they will bring
Life of another complexion where you'll be king
You will awake in the morning and start to sing
Moonlight Cocktails are the thing
The lyrics of Glenn Miller's “Moonlight Cocktail” are evocative of a romantic and whimsical summer night. It describes the recipe for a perfect night of love, music, and magic under the moonlight. Miller’s use of poetic language like “jiggers of moonlight,” “blue of a June night,” and “drop of dew” creates a dreamlike atmosphere that emphasizes the importance of imagination and creativity in crafting a magical evening. The lyrics suggest that all you need to create this potion is to mix in a couple of dreamers with the right amount of moonlight, music, and nature.
The song is also about the power of storytelling and the ability of music to capture and transport us to other worlds. Miller describes the “simple directions” for the Moonlight Cocktail as a way to access a “life of another complexion where you'll be king.” This suggests that the song is about more than just a recipe for a drink, but also the recipe for a life full of love and imagination.
Overall, “Moonlight Cocktail” is a beautiful, poetic, and evocative song that captures the essence of a perfect summer night full of romance, music, and magic.

My mom passed away tonight. She was 98. This was her favorite song. We played this song on our phone, put it next to her ear, she took a deep breath and then she was gone. I know that she felt safe and at peace.

Oh gosh, that is beautiful. What a way to go. Surrounded by loved ones, being serenaded by Glenn Miller. Rest in peace, Sylvia's mom.

The first time I heard this I was sitting in my grandfather's lap as a little boy of four. My grandfather was a veteran of the Pacific Campaign during World War II born in 1922. We used to solve crossword puzzles together and that was always our thing. I'm now in my 30's. Hearing this always harkens back to some of my earliest memories of my grandfather. He was a skilled carpenter and machinist in particular but understood all trades. He sadly passed away due to injuries he sustained in a car accident in 1998 when I was 9 years old. To me, he typifies the Greatest Generation who fought to end fascism and forge a better world that we enjoy today. RIP Perry Howe
