The band's act consisted of singing operatic versions of contemporary songs, including "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Creep" and "Everybody Hurts", and arrangements of popular operatic pieces, such as "Nessun Dorma", and "La donna è mobile".
Naturally gifted performers who were formally trained at the Guildhall School of Music, G4 originally met as a busking group who sang live across London to earn money and experience. Jon saw an advert for the X-Factor auditions and applied on a whim. They delivered great performances and wowed a captivated audience week after week, and the rest is history.
Following a spectacular rise to fame, their hugely successful debut album " G4" entered the UK album charts at Number 1, selling an amazing 245,000 in its first week alone. It has since been certified double platinum and has now sold in excess of 700,000 copies.
Jerusalem
G4 Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Walk upon England's mountains green?
And was the Holy Lamb of God
on England's pleasant pastures seen?
And did the Countenance Divine,
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here
Bring me my bow of burning gold!
Bring me my arrows of desire!
Bring me my spear: O clouds unfold!
Bring me my Chariot of Fire!
I will not cease from mental fight;
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand
Til we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land
The opening lines of the song "Jerusalem" by G4 are a reference to a poem by William Blake called "And did those feet in ancient time," which was later set to music. The lyrics question whether Jesus walked on England's mountains and if the Holy Lamb of God ever graced its pastures. The idea behind the verse is that England was once a holy land, and this momentous event could have occurred there.
The second verse of the song refers to the idea that, despite the darkness and doubt that shrouds the hills, there is still a divine presence, and that Jerusalem could have been built there. The idea of relating the city of Jerusalem to England is rooted in history, with the notion that Joseph of Arimathea, who had a connection to Christ, visited Glastonbury, England.
The final verse of the song calls for action, specifically for the bow of burning gold, arrows of desire, and a chariot of fire. These references are symbolic of the singer's willingness to fight to build Jerusalem in England's green and pleasant lands. The last line of the verse, "I will not cease from mental fight; Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand," expresses the singer's resolve to achieve the goal of building Jerusalem through his unrelenting determination.
