GAYLE Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I swear I meant to mean the best when it ended
Even tried to bite my tongue when you start sh-
Now you're textin' all my friends asking questions
They never even liked you in the first place (first place)
Dated a girl that I hate for the attention
She only made it two days, what a connection
It's like you'd do anythin' for my affection
You're goin' all about it in the worst ways

I was into you, but I'm over it now
And I was tryna be nice
But nothing's gettin' through
So let me spell it out

A-B-C-D-E, forget you
And your mom and your sister and your job
And your broke down car and the things you call art
Forget you and your friends that I'll never see again
Everybody but your dog, you can all get lost

Na-na-na-na, na-na
Forget you (woo)
You, you
C-D-E, forget you (woo)
You, you

Forget you and your friends that I'll never see again
Everybody but your dog, you can all get lost
Forget you
Na-na-na-na, na-na, na-na
A-B-C-D-E, forget you

Said you just needed space and so I gave it
When I had nothin' to say, you couldn't take it
Told everyone I'm a- so I became it
Always had to put yourself above me

I was into you, but I'm over it now
And I was tryna be nice
But nothing's gettin' through
So let me spell it out

A-B-C-D-E, forget you
And your mom and your sister and your job
And your broke down car and the things you call art
Forget you and your friends that I'll never see again
Everybody but your dog, you can all get lost

Na-na-na-na, na-na
Forget you (woo)
You, you
C-D-E, forget you (woo)
You, you

Forget you and your friends that I'll never see again
Everybody but your dog, you can all get lost
Forget you

Na-na-na-na, na-na, na-na
A-B-C-D-E, forget you

Overall Meaning

The song "ABC" by Gayle is an anthem of empowerment and liberation for those who have had enough of a toxic relationship. The lyrics depict a story of a person who was trying to be nice in a relationship that had gone sour but had to eventually take a stand for themselves. The lyrics talk about the effort this person made to end the relationship as gracefully as possible, such as biting their tongue when there was an argument or giving their partner space when they needed it. But despite their efforts, their partner continued to pester them with questions and even texted their friends. The lyrics also mention how the ex-partner dated someone else for attention, but it only lasted two days.

The chorus of the song is the most empowering part where the person tells their ex-partner to forget them and everyone and everything associated with them. They spell it out by singing the alphabet to make sure the message is clear. The song is a testament to the fact that sometimes, one must cut off all ties with the past to move on completely.

@doggy4070

I liked this song just because she sings “everybody but your dog…”
TRUE! The saddest part about losing a bad friend/ex is having to say goodbye to their animals.

@queenlollipop4724

same lmao XD

@carladigregorio1673

In fact, you're right

@fuzail760

Funny how abusing humans is accepted and animals are superiorly treated while u continue to mistreat fellows?
I thought treating animals well was aimed at teaching humans to learn to treat each other better as well!
