Coastline
GEOFFROY Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh my (oh my), my troubled mind (my troubled mind)
Never rested, never still
(Never rested, never still)
(Never rested, never still)
I've found (I've found) that nor you nor I (nor you nor I)
Would ever compromise our lives
(Would ever compromise our lives)
(Would ever compromise our lives)

Even though I sound selfish
I'm all right, better off your mind
Even if the best years of my life have been lived I don't mind

I've been stalling on the coastline, staying out of sight
Been stoned and overthinking, misreading all your signs
I'm done watching on the action, eyeing from the side
So tired and out of patience, been blunt and out of line

Oh I keep moving but I know
I ain't fooling anyone
I'm an old soul, my love, a victim of
Slowly giving up the ghost

Hanging 'round out of habit
Should have walked or taken off by now
You keep on pushing 'til I break down
Let me break up like a man

I've been stalling on the coastline, staying out of sight
Been stoned and overthinking, misreading all your signs
I'm done watching on the action, eyeing from the side
So tired and out of patience, been blunt and out of line

Never rested, never still
Never rested, never still
Never rested, never still
Never rested, never still

I've been stalling on the coastline, staying out of sight
Been stoned and overthinking, misreading all your signs

I'm done watching on the action, eyeing from the side
So tired and out of patience, been blunt and out of line

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Geoffrey’s song “Coastline” explore the turmoil of a troubled mind that is constantly worrying and never at rest. The singer seems to be in a difficult place in life, possibly struggling with relationships or other personal issues. Despite this, they suggest that neither they nor their partner would be willing to compromise their lives for the other, highlighting a sense of stubbornness or a clash of ideals. The singer admits that they may sound selfish, but they are content with their decisions and do not mind if the best years of their life have already passed.

The chorus speaks to the idea of being stuck or stagnant. The singer has been “stalling on the coastline,” perhaps metaphorically representing a sense of being trapped or unable to move forward. They feel as though they have been overthinking and misreading the signs in their life, but are now tired and out of patience with their own behavior. The repetition of “never rested, never still” throughout the song emphasizes this sense of unease, indicating that the singer is constantly in motion internally, but may not be able to find peace or stability.

Overall, the lyrics to “Coastline” offer a poignant exploration of the human experience, particularly when it comes to themes of uncertainty, restlessness, and the difficulties of relationships. The song is a relatable and heartfelt expression of the emotions that many people go through at some point in their lives.

Feeling nostalgia for a time I never lived in.

This is exactly what it was like, between 1980 to 1985. If it makes you feel any better, though, the U.S. economy was shit then and Cold War tensions were through the roof. John Lennon was murdered, Reagan was nearly assasinated, VHS was still in its infancy, and European airports were routinely targeted by terrorist bombings.

Still... it was pretty chill. I managed to have a hell of a great time.
