Murder
GILMOUR David Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Some of them standing, some were waiting in the line
As if there was something that they thought they might find
Taking some strength from the feelings that always were shared
And in the background, the eyes that just stared

What was it brought you out here in the dark?
Was it your only way of making your mark
Did you get rid of all the voices in your head?
Do you now miss them and the things that they said?

On your own admission you raised up the knife
And you brought it down ending another man's life
When it was done you just threw down the blade
While the red blood spread wider like the anger you made

I don't want this anger that's burning in me
It's something from which it's so hard to be free

But none of the tears that we cry in sorrow or rage
Can make any difference, or turn back the page

Overall Meaning

The song "Murder" by David Gilmour explores the dark and disturbing theme of murder. The lyrics delve into the mind of the murderer, questioning what led them to commit the heinous act and asking whether they feel any remorse. The opening lines paint a vivid picture of the aftermath of the murder, with some people standing and waiting in line, perhaps as witnesses or mere bystanders, while others stare in disbelief at the horror that has unfolded before them.

Gilmour then questions the murderer, asking what brought them to this point. Was it a desire to leave their mark on the world, or were they tormented by the voices in their head that they have now silenced? The lyrics suggest that the murderer feels a sense of power and control over their victim, as they raised the knife and ended their life in a moment of violence. Yet, the aftermath of the act is one of regret and sadness, as the red blood spreads wider like the anger that was unleashed.

The final lines of the song reflect on the futility of tears and sorrow in the face of such senseless violence. The anger burning in the singer's heart is something that is hard to be free from, but ultimately, it can't change what has happened, and no amount of tears can turn back the page.

Overall, "Murder" is a haunting and thought-provoking song that delves into the darkness of the human psyche and leaves the listener with a sense of unease.

Fretless bass lines by the enormous Pino Palladino are sublime. Never had David such a great bass player, Waters included.

@CJFerg81

I'm sure Guy Pratt would knock it out of the park if he was given the chance to play this live with DG.

@samuelluria4744

Marcelo Soto-Quiroga - Lol, Waters plays bass about as well as I play the motherfucking spoons.

@timc2219

waters was a mediocre player at best... wrote some really good stuff, gotta give him that... sadly not a fan, he did to floyd what yoko did to the beatles... then again, after DSOTM, was there anywhere to go? David Gilmour and Polly Samson took them in a good direction, and best of all they all looked happy to play together, with waters, the tension appeared to make it more of a job than a joy...

@elausente21

@@CJFerg81 no doubt, Pino is amazing, but Guy is extremely versatile

@jameshosford4627

@@timc2219 Can we please get over this nonsense, racist, misogynist notion that Yoko broke up The Beatles?

Also where else did they have to go? Maybe three more of the greatest albums of all time?

Brilliant song! Easily one of my favorite Gilmour pieces. RIP John Lennon.

The quintessential Gilmour vocal.

@nightmission

I remember buying this album when it first released.. I was 14 years old and when that needle dropped and I heard this song , I became a life long fan of the artist that David is as a individual. and not just a part of Pink Floyd... He is one of those guitarist that leaves you with the impression , that his heart and soul are speaking through his guitar...

Nicely put 🙏
