Prior to their official debut as GOT7, members Jaebeom and Jinyoung debuted as a special project unit entitled JJ Project in May of 2012. Additionally, four of the remaining five members of the group appeared on the September 6, 2013 episode of MNET's reality-survival program WIN: Who Is Next, where they competed against trainees from rival company YG Entertainment. Their appearance on the show gained the group many fans among netizens.
The group released their debut mini-album Got It? on January 20, 2014. The group made their first comeback in June that same year with the release of their second mini-album GOT♡, featuring the lead single "A". In October of 2014 the group ventured into the Japanese market with the release of their debut Japanese-language single AROUND THE WORLD.
The group released their first full-length studio album Identify in December of 2014, lead by the title track "하지 하지마 (Stop stop it)".

The lyrics of GOT7's song "ZERO" express the feeling of emptiness and insignificance when the person you love is not with you. The song starts by expressing the feeling of a heart beating faster for the first time and finding that special someone in the memories. However, the person disappears just before the final moment, leaving the singer lost in a dream. The thought of the existence of that person becoming zero without their smile adds to the despair.
The lyrics then talk about the probability of meeting again on the fate's return path being 100 to 0. The singer acknowledges that although they will love the person, their existence without them will be zero. The song then takes a turn towards hope, where the singer talks about holding hands and moving towards the feeling, even if it is all that they have. The person's absence makes their lives and moments without meaning, but they continue to hope that they will come back, and when they do, the zeroes will add up, and their existence will be 100.
