Si L'on Comptait Les étoiles

Jusqu'au petit jour
Si l'on comptait les étoiles
Si l'on comptait les étoiles
Jusqu'au petit jour
Si l'on comptait les étoiles
Baby come on and tell me
You say you're happy but
You want to move on
You give me signals
It's so hard to tell
What can I do
I'm under your spell
I'm trying hard (on passait notre temps)
To understand (à tourner autour)
You're schizophrenic (à faire comme si le vent)
For all I can tell (avait des contours)
Now, now
You want to go on
Now, now
You want to stay on
Now, now
You want to go on
Now, now
You want to stay on
Confusion
It's got me at bay
Do I go
Should I run away?
I'm trying hard
To understand
I'm like a fish
Caught in a net
Now, now
You want to go on
Now, now
You want to stay on
Now, now
You want to go on
Si l'on comptait les étoiles
Jusqu'au petit jour
Si l'on comptait les étoiles
Si l'on comptait les étoiles
Jusqu'au petit jour (sometimes it seems)
Si l'on comptait les étoiles (we're doing so well)
Baby come on tell me
Is it something I said?
Do you look beyond
Is it just this?
I'm trying hard
To understand
Why make me suffer
If you don't want more?
I think it's time (on passait notre temps)
To go out the door (à tourner autour)
I'm trying hard (à faire comme si le vent)
To understand (on passe notre temps)
Just leave me alone (à compter les jours)
So I can lead on (serions-nous si changeants?
It's for the best (ni contre, ni pour)
One day you'll see
Sometimes it seems we're doing so well
Sometimes it seems it's so hard to tell
Sometimes it seems that I'm all alone (si l'on comptait les étoiles)
Sometimes it seems that we can't go on (si l'on comptait les étoiles)
Now, now
You want to go on
Now, now
You want to stay on
Now, now
You want to go on
Now, now
You want to stay on
Si l'on comptait les étoiles
Jusqu'au petit jour
Si l'on comptait les étoiles
Si l'on comptait les étoiles
Jusqu'au petit jour (now)
Si l'on comptait les étoiles
Gaëtan Roussel's "Si l'on comptait les étoiles" is a song about a relationship that's on the brink of collapse. The song opens with an invitation to count the stars until dawn, a romantic gesture that suggests hope and possibility. However, as the song progresses, the mood shifts to confusion and uncertainty. The singer is tortured by his lover's mixed signals and erratic behavior, unsure whether to stay or go. The repeated refrain of counting the stars suggests a longing for simplicity and clarity, a desire to escape the complexities of the relationship.
The second verse introduces the theme of schizophrenia, equating the lover's behavior with a mental disorder. The singer is caught in a net, struggling to understand and escape the confusion. The chorus repeats the conflicting desires of the lover, wanting to go and stay simultaneously. This repeated refrain of indecision and confusion reinforces the central theme of the song.
As the song reaches its conclusion, the singer realizes that it's time to leave. He's tired of trying to understand his lover's behavior and just wishes to be left alone. The repeated refrain of counting the stars takes on a new meaning, suggesting a desire for a simpler, uncomplicated existence.
Overall, "Si l'on comptait les étoiles" is a poignant exploration of the complexities of love and the difficulties of navigating relationships.
