Because He Lives
Gaither Vocal Band Bill Gaither Trio Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

God sent his son, they called him Jesus,
He came to love, heal and forgive.
He lived and died to buy my pardon,
An empty grave is there to prove my savior lives.

[Chorus]
Because he lives
I can face tomorrow
Because he lives
All fear is gone
Because i know he holds the future
And life is worth the living
Just because he lives

How sweet to hold a newborn baby,
And feel the pride and joy he gives,
But greater still the calm assurance:
This child can face uncertain day because he lives.

[Chorus]

And then one day I'll cross the river,
I'll fight life's final war with pain.
And then, as death gives way to vict'ry,
I'll see the lights of glory and I'll know he reigns.

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

The song "Because He Lives" by Gaither Vocal Band Bill Gaither Trio is a Christian hymn that speaks about the impact of Jesus Christ's life, death, and resurrection on the world. The first verse starts by talking about the story of Jesus Christ, God's son, who came into the world to spread love, heal the sick, and forgive sinners. He lived a life of sacrifice and died on the cross to provide salvation for humanity. The verse talks about Jesus's mission to purchase our pardon, but it's through his resurrection that he proves his divinity and power.

The chorus of the song emphasizes that because of Jesus's resurrection, the singer can face tomorrow, and all their fears are gone. The knowledge that Jesus holds the future and that life is worth living just because he lives gives them comfort and hope. The second verse talks about the joy of holding a newborn baby, but the greater assurance comes from knowing that because of Jesus Christ, even a child can face uncertain days with strength and courage.

The final verse talks about the reality of death and how the singer will face life's final battle with pain. However, the resurrection of Jesus brings hope and victory over death, and the singer can look forward to seeing the lights of glory, knowing that Jesus reigns.

Overall, the message of the song is about the power of Jesus's resurrection and what it means for believers. The hope and assurance that come with the knowledge that Jesus lives can help them face any trial, fear, or uncertainty in life.

Every time I listen to this song, I can hear my Dad singing harmony in my mind. This was his favorite song. Still brings tears to my eyes.

What a joy for me to find this recording! I had chosen this as "my baby's song" before he was born, little knowing just what we would have to face in our future. But because HE lives, we could face each tomorrow and life is so worth living! I'm compiling a playlist with all the songs that have been the greatest blessing to me these many years, and am overjoyed to find this song with the younger Gaither voices, as they were when I chose this song. Thank you for posting this!

At a very dark moment of my life, I listened to several hymns, I couldn't help tearing. It was also listening these hymns I finally could calm down. And I realize it's all because He lives. In life I may find someone I really love or care for. But ultimately the life only worth the living when I live for God. Anything else is just miserable. Because He lives. :)

I had a very difficult job for over 3 years. Management was doing all they could at work & outside to force me to quit. I couldn't quit. Finally, they fired me. That night at church they sang this song. What a blessing! Thanks Bill & Gloria.

I saw them with my youth group in about 1972. Today in 2018 I was reminded to look up this song. May they go on to influence Christians.

This is a comforting song that touches me personally. I found out that Danny Gathier passed away in 2001 after a 5 year battle against Lymphoma. I don't know how bad his Lymphoma was, but all I know is that I was just diagnosed with this same disease last month. But my Lymphoma is a Hodgkins Lymphoma at stage 1 type A. Listening to Danny sing this me comfort that Because He Lives, I can face tomorrow. Please pray for me.
