Samba de uma nota so
Gal Costa/Tom Jobim Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
built upon a single note
Other notes are bound to follow but the root is still that note
Now this new one is the consequence
of the one we've just been through
As I'm bound to be the unavoidable consequence of you
There's so many people who can talk and talk and talk
I have used up all the scale I know and at the end I've come
To nothing, or nearly nothing
So I come back to my first note
as I must come back to you
I will pour into that one note
all the love I feel for you
Any one who wants the whole show do-re-mi-fa-so-la-si-do
He will find himself with no show
Better play the note you know
There's so many people who can talk and talk and talk
And just say nothing or nearly nothing
I have used up all the scale I know and at the end I've come
To nothing, I mean nothing
So I come back to my first note
as I must come back to you
I will pour into that one note
all the love I feel for you
Any one who wants the whole show do-re-mi-fa-so-la-si-do
He will find himself with no show
Better play the notes you know
The lyrics to the song "Samba de uma nota só" by Gal Costa and Tom Jobim reflect on the simplicity and beauty of music. The song begins by describing itself as a simple samba, built around a single note. It then acknowledges that more notes will follow, but the root of the song is still that one note. The lyrics go on to say that the new notes are a consequence of the previous ones, much like the relationship between the singer and their lover.
The song then speaks to the power of music to communicate complex emotions. The lyrics describe a feeling of running out of things to say, as if the singer has exhausted all the notes in their range. But they find comfort in returning to the first note of the song, representing a return to their true feelings for their lover. The lyrics suggest that the most important thing in music, and in life, is to be authentic and express oneself honestly. The song advises against overcomplicating things, instead urging people to focus on what they know and what feels true to them.
Overall, "Samba de uma nota só" is a song about simplicity, authenticity, and the power of music to evoke deep feelings. The lyrics suggest that even the simplest samba can be beautiful and meaningful if it is played with sincerity and love.

HOLY AUDIO. INCREDIBLE
If you notice... In the beginning. The band was a bit too preppy for Tom,, he played a loud chord at 0:59 and immediately the instrumentalists volume levels went down. Incredible synergy

I thought I WAS THE ONLY ONE to notice that, as this video is a number of years old! But unless you listened carefully, you wouldn't have even heard it, because the song itself is so very smooth to the silk touch! :)
