Water
Galantis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Snowfall on the treetops
The streets are bare
Bright lights in the window
And up the stairs
In all of your silence
In all of your songs
I still hear the choir
But you are gone

Can't go back
Can't fight this

Water, water
Teardrops are falling like rain
'Daughter, daughter
Still hear you calling my name
I'll see your light
In the water for all my life

I'm standing on my tiptoes
And coming undone
You were my hero when I was young
We live, but we never know
We're lost in the wind
A million candles, just flickering

Can't go back
Can't fight this

Water, water
Teardrops are falling like rain
'Daughter, daughter
Still hear you calling my name
I'll see your light
In the water for all my life

Lifted high, let me lay down at your side
Here I'll stay 'til your soul comes back to mine

Water, water
Teardrops are falling like rain
'Daughter, daughter
Still hear you calling my name

I'll see your light
In the water for all my life

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Galantis's song "Water" tell the emotional story of loss, remembrance, and acceptance. The first verse sets the tone with an image of snow-covered trees and empty streets. The singer then enters a house with bright lights and hears a choir, but the person they are looking for is missing. The chorus brings up the metaphor of water, with teardrops falling like rain, as the singer feels the loss of someone dear to them. They still hear the person calling their name and see their light in the water, a symbol of their everlasting memory.

The second verse expands on the theme of loss and memories. The singer feels undone, but also remembers how the missing person was their hero when they were young. The lyrics touch upon the theme of mortality, where we live but never know what's coming. The use of candles flickering and the metaphor of being lost in the wind evoke the fleeting nature of life. The bridge is a plea for connection, where the singer wants to stay close until their loved one's soul comes back to theirs. The final chorus repeats the main themes, with an added layer of feeling lifted high, and finding solace in the memory of the person who's gone.

Overall, Galantis's "Water" is a heartfelt meditation on loss and remembrance, with water as a recurring symbolic motif. The lyrics are full of vivid, sensory details, and speak to the universal experience of losing someone dear to us.

+Charles Martz Matt Cardle put it on his album "The Fire" 3 years ago, inspired by the untimely death of his late uncle. If you like, check out the very requiem-ish original in this video [ 6JO0KBAWnwg ] :)
