Pulseman's attack is called Volteccer actually, which is more based in name to Tekkaman's signature Vol Tekka, a powerful beam attack. I'm half sure the japanese spelling of all three Volt Tackle, Volteccer and Vol Tekka is the exact same.

Also, Porygon wasn't the first time a half-virtual half-real creature made by gamefreak tried to give everyone seizures. You don't need to look far beyond AntDude's footage to realize that Pulseman is a declaration of war against epilectic people.

Seriously, it's an okay game but absolutely DO. NOT. PLAY IT if flashing lights cause you discomfort. They don't shy away from doing the forbidden red-blue or red-green combo strobe lights that absolutely will send you right to the hospital.

Porygon did nothing wrong. Rotom did.

Speaking of Rotom, it was introduced in Diamond and Pearl as coming out of a broken TV displaying static. Now go and take a look at Pulseman's title screen, complete with him coming out of the static and doing that hand gesture. Gamefreak absolutely love throwing references to that game, but they know damn well to not touch it with a 10-meter pole after what happened with that one Porygon anime episode.

In XY, I also remember there was a grass patch that was shaped like a music note, with an item inside it, reminiscent of the notes in Harmo Knight with the star inside.

What is even cooler about Pulseman is that Pikachu's signature move, Volt Tackle, comes from the same attack Pulseman has. Really love that Game Freak gives nods to their non-Pokémon games in Pokémon.

@abloodcorpse Pulseman was released 2 years before Pokémon Green in Japan and even if it wasn't, Volt Tackle only became a move in Pokémon in the third gen, basically a decade after Pulseman.

Pulseman is great, there's a lot of stuff in it that would later become stuff in Pokemon. There's a boss that's an Onix, an enemy that's a Remoraid, Pulseman's signature move being Volt Tackle, one of the stage themes is Barry's battle theme, and even more.

I remember watching a review of the game years ago where they said the final boss theme is a fantastic piece of music, but the final boss itself is so tedious and drags on for so long that they had to mute the game to save their sanity.

@Cirom Breeze Mobile phones and PC are neutral territory. There are plenty of official Mario games on those devices, and they don't violate Nintendo exclusivity.

I remember getting Drill Dozer because I just finished Wario Land 4 for the first time and loving it and I wanted another experience similar to that. Drill Dozer ended up being very Wario-like and because it's been over 12 years since the last 2D Wario game, I appreciate that!

It's actually pretty common for companies to work on smaller projects alongside the bigger ones to prevent burnout, you're the first person I've seen mention it. LTH didn't have that big of a budget and was made by a small team of less than a handful of people so I don't get why it was pushed so hard.

@Schummelmodul878 not sure where you heard that, but absolutely not. LTH had about 40 people working on it, many of which were contractors. Sw/Sh had 200 Gamefreak employees working on it, over a thousand if you wanna include Creatures Inc. helping out, debuggers, game testers, etc. I think people took one vague statement about Gamefreak working on "other projects" and automatically assumed LTH was the blame

Harmo-Knight is a game that holds so much nostalgia for me. Back when the 3DS was in its prime, I don't remember how, but I got the demo for it on my console. One day I got bored and decided to play it, and Oh My God. I loved it so much. Eventually one of my family friends got me a digital copy, and it was a blast and a half.

If we're talking questionable Pokemon decisions, can we talk about how Little Town Hero released about a month before Pokemon Sword & Shield dropped (the former was in October 2019, the latter in November) which obviously means Game Freak made the very poor decision to make TWO WHOLE GAMES at the same time? I actually bought Giga Wrecker on Switch but haven't played it yet. I do want to check out Tembo the Badass Elephant because it's called Tembo the Badass Elephant.

Edit: One thing I feel the need to point out is that Gamefreak is a really small company. A few years ago the had roughly a little over 250 employees, now it's down to less than 170. Keep in mind these are employees, not developers. That includes the receptionist, the janitor, the gopher who buys coffee and snacks. Pokemon is the biggest multimedia franchise on the planet, but the core is still the games despite it only being a fraction of it net income. It must be difficult having that kind of pressure on a very small studio. While Gamefreak may not be the best in the technical aspects of development they still do a great job in the creative side as they still design most pokemon. They really need another team working on the franchise to help ease the burden.

TL;DR Making games is hard. Especially for a such a small team at the heart of a multimedia juggernaut.

i was definitely surprised when i saw the name Game Freak on games other than Pokemon, my "first encounter" as it were with Game Freak just before Pokemon even came out was Pulseman, a game i got to try out during the days of good old SEGA Channel... to this day i still miss that service, $10 for all the games at your fingertips was like being blessed by the almighty.

I have the second game that Game Freak created, Smart Ball, for the SNES. It's a fun 2D sidescrolling platformer, has a bit of an odd gimmick it's based around. Jerry, the player character, can roll around, roll up walls, and bounce.

Pocket Card Jockey is one of the few 3DS games I unironically still play. It's just sooo good and I really can't recommend it enough.

Tembo had a great style and some good ideas but I feel like ultimately felt a little...off to play. Some times where the level design didn't contrast well with your abilities and the need to grind to play later levels. If they do make a sequel hope they can fix these problems....oh and that watching Tembo eat to respawn doesn't take as long

12:12 You can actually find translated ROMs online for the sequel, I played it for a little while, and it's better than the first one for the most part (though the music is kinda irritating tbh). The different characters get unique abilities to traverse through levels, there's about 5 different setpieces in an amusement park, but you're not missing much from not playing it.

Harmoknight was my favorite when I was young. I remember getting the game before Pokemon X and it was a rhythm blast. Here's to hoping maybe (just maybe) Harmoknight 2 would come to the Switch.

(Also after January 18th, you can no long put money into your 3DS E Shop. I HIGHLY recommend getting this game, which is just $15, and The Legend of Dark Witch 2, which is $6 I think, before they are no long available after the 18th. I can't recommend these games enough. )

I gotta be honest, I completely forgot about Little Town Hero. I remember seeing it shown under the working title "Town" in a 2018 Nintendo Direct, and just never heard about it again. Surprised to hear that it came out two years ago with little to no fanfare. I probably would have picked it up had Nintendo marketed it more, to be honest.

I beat Harmon Knight. It was a fun playthrough, but frustrating at times. Rewatching cutscenes just to redo a tough part of a level gets tedious at times, but still worth playing.

Fun fact about their work on the Game Boy Camera: That was actually the first video game for Western audiences that had Pokemon in it, as the Game Boy Camera came out before Blue and Red did in the states.

Little Town Hero was...interesting. It pretty much felt like damage control for the Dexit controversy that ultimately failed due to how mediocre and rushed it turned out to be. They did get Toby Fox to do the music, and I won't lie when I say that the battle system was actually pretty interesting, but...it just didn't really work.

Wow, I actually played Smart Ball back in the day as a kid. I don't remember it being 'THAT' bad, just pretty average.
Then again, game quality standards were pretty different in the 16-bit era; and at that age I'm pretty sure having 'standards' was a bit of a foreign concept to me.

The ending of smart ball is hilarious. The English localized version doesn’t give context to anything that’s happening in the story so it ends in the strangest fever dream of events.

My 3ds backlog is so insane because every time I went to play a game I saw Pocket Card Jockey just calling me. Such a good game.

Well heck. I actually dug Little Town Hero. Slow game, sure, but I loved having to sit back and actually stratigize my moves. I am aware I am very unique in this perspective

I liked it but it suffered in some places different attack animations and more areas and a way to grind would have improved the game dramatically

Nah, I'm with you. Game was charming and if you dont like card games in general, then you obviously wont like this one too

I actually really liked Giga Wrecker. Messing with debris physics is quite fun, and the art style is one of the best I've seen for this kind of game. The boss battles are also pretty good. Give it a look on Steam or Switch if you like action-puzzle games.

The morning after a party, I wound up hungover in a Toys R Us. They just happened to have a Buy One, Get One 50% sale on games that day. I picked up the Castlevania Double Pack and Drill Dozer. . .It was a good day.

Game Freak is definitely a weird developer. They aren't very big, and looking at the Pokémon series, their design chops seem a bit unrefined. Yet some of their original output feels like it's from an entirely different studio. Granted, they definitely have a style (just put Pulseman, Drill Dozer, and HarmoKnight side-by-side), but they require both decent budgets and project control to realize it well.

The main reason I wanted to watch this was to hear about Little Town Hero, since I dont remember seeing ANYTHING about it once it was released. Shame.
I also cant believe I knew about Tembo The Badass Elephant but not that it was made by GameFreak.

I was glad to buy both HarmoKnights and Pocket Card Jockey for my 3DS system. At least before Nintendo shuts down the shop for the system. Good to have someone talk about those games. I thorough enjoyed Pocket Card Jockey, it was a good time killer for sure. Though yeah the lag can be noticeable at times.
