Almost totally agree, and I can assure you because I have played all the pokémon up to the last gen.
Sol y Luna has been a masterpiece, even though the first island was a bit disastrous, but the music is brutal, artistic design, history, gameplay, the islanders have their customs, their own greeting, and their legends, deities, etc ... Esmeralda was a great game, but I put it a little behind Sun and Moon because there is not much innovation, the game does not feel so alive, although a lot of new things were added to the Hoenn region and I enjoyed it a lot, but Sun and Moon It has given me great satisfaction and great enjoyment and it has been the only game in the series that made me go into depth with the game, as if I were the player myself.
Emerald is a great game without hesitation, I have enjoyed it a lot, the island of Hoenn and its mysteries, forests, etc ...
But what I have felt with Sun and Moon I have not felt with other Pokémon games.
There are many players who did not like these games because there are no gyms...
gyms feel boring to me ... The way they executed the idea of island trials and then fighting the captains is a masterful idea!
I got tired of gyms, it was always the same, and this game renewed everything, and I loved how they played it!
I would certainly love for them to always innovate and ditch the outdated gym system.
I recently played pearl and diamond remakes, and gyms get boring and don't feel as exciting as Sun and Moon.

This game was my introduction to the Pokemon series, and all because a good friend of mine recommended I play it.
That was 3 years ago, time goes by so quickly...
I do hope someday this game will be remembered in a positive light, as a departure from Pokemon tradition. Could be nostalgia speaking, but this entire region was really charming. Great visuals, excellent story, memorable soundtrack, and an equal parts exciting and relaxing atmosphere.
I am eternally grateful to my friend who introduced me to the Pokemon series, and I'm glad this game was my first.
