Frankly, I thought Alola was boring. Much like the other guy said it's area design left each area feeling the same and without much to see.
However, the focus on story was superb and the totems were awesome changes of pace. That I do like and have never not acknowledged. It also looked better than Sword/Shield.
But that last part, looking better than Sw/Sh is sorta the problem. *Not the graphics, but the lack of long-standing improvement*.

Pokemon games add something different every game. The issue is all these differences seem to just be one-off gimmicks with no understanding of what the games leave to be desired. Feels like they exist to draw people in and nothing else. I loved challenge mode from BW2. It was a long-desired mode that by all rights should have became the norm. Yet we never saw it again.. Sometimes good things stay, like Pokemon Amie.

It's a incredibly Pokemon-specific problem these games face that many other series do not: Significant forward progress.

Pokemon has made absolutely absurd money and impact over it's years and yet all other big Nintendo IP's feel like game changers each new game.. And Pokemon is just.. THERE. It's like they are in a whole different ball park of developmental prowess. Frankly, they probably are.

And that feeling (the feeling of disappointment in baby-step forward progress, lack of continuity for existing concepts/features/mechanics, and frequently questionable if not backwards progress) feels exactly the same.

It feels kinda awesome that the region that I started Pokemon with is now responsible for Game Freak getting out of the kids pool and into the deep end.

This is the most excited I’ve been for a Pokemon game since Pokken, and that’s saying something, because I was incredibly hyped for Pokken

Tbh even if Gamefreak doesn’t succeed in making Legends Arceus *good*, I’m impressed enough with what they’re shooting for that it’s got me properly excited for future pokemon games again

Just because there's people on the net complaining, doesn't mean the game is widely disliked tbf.
We'll see how well Legends does. I do hope it sells well and is taken well by the majority of players, but there will ofc be a vocal minority that'll hate on the game.

I feel like youve really improved on your writing (not that it ever bad). You manage to call GF out while maintaining a fair an objective perspective on the company and the franchise. Its funny that u guys say that when u NEVER acknowledge that Alola felt so different compared to other games. Alola had a different main objective in the Island Challenge, the story was unique, the professor is so diff compared to others, the region feels unique, etc.

@Zad Rasera I think the hand-holding got in its way but the more interesting parts of the overall plot (Guzma's backstory, Lusamine's true motivations, Team Skull's background and the stuff with the Ultra Beasts) is all kept to either random NPC dialogue that's not part of the main storyline or in the Ultra Beast's case, mostly kept to the post-game. The most interesting thing in Sun/Moon was the concept of alternate timelines/dimensions and Anabel being from Gen 3 Hoenn but that's all post-game so there's probably not many casual players who cared. One thing I found really interesting that almost never came up in the game is the idea that not every trainer can become champion and a lot of them end up homeless due to varying circumstances. The idea of a bunch of kids as young as 11 not being able to go home due to failing as a trainer could have been very interesting.

The region was dull and flat (but nice to look at), the Island Challenge is just the gym challenge with a few small differences, the plot was severely lacking and of course, there was the hand-holding problem. Alola was different but not in any significant way.

Thing is, Alola was nothing more than "one step forwards, one step back" for Pokemon. Story was great, second only really to Unova's IMO, really liked the aesthetic, Island Challenges were a VERY nice change of pace, and (something I don't hear enough people talk about) it definitely helped in making Pokémon feel like a completed world. Plenty of characters returned, and not just the obvious like Red and Blue, but some that were truly out of left field, like Colress. This helped make Pokémon S&M not just feel like a new story, but an expansion on stories previously unfinished. And it actually made you keep your champion title, plus fighting Kukui was cool.

But, for every great thing it does, it does another thing far worse. The world design is at an absolute low here, at least X&Y, while not perfectly designed, gave some incentive for exploration and made me feel compelled to return to places I may have gone past. Meanwhile, I NEVER felt compelled to return to any areas in-game. That, and it basically erased all the amazing things Mega Evolution did. No Super Training, Pokémon Refresh was like Amie (which was already underdeveloped) but worse (also a free Full Heal at any spot in the game is OP af.) No new E4 members besides the golf lady, and I don't even remember her name. Also, the game removed triple and rotation battles, in favor of having the player character command their Pokemon, which would actually be a welcome-ish addition if it weren't for the fact that they did nothing besides sit around. You can only fish in certain areas... okay this change makes zero sense. Like, if anything, that takes MORE effort than not. No roller skates, no bike reused models and animations from X and Y... this game was extremely disappointing even compared to the also quite disappointing X and Y.

it could work similar to the "memories" stuff in XY (for those who don't remember, there was this NPC in XY who read your pokemon's mempries, and it was unique to the pokemon, depending on where you caught it and what battles it took part in), so like, the description deends on what the pokemon did in front of, or to you before (or maybe even after, say you get an option to edit your description) you caught it

I'm afraid I'm still not entirely sold on Legends Arceus. Believe me, the CONCEPT is everything I've ever wanted in a home console game. But in execution? Well. It's not an instant buy for me. We'll see through. I feel like one more good look at the game will make or break it for me.

Tbh the more I see of Legends the more I become skeptical. Although one thing I can enjoy is that GF isn’t adding a whole new dex. Ever since gen 6 I’ve been wondering if we even need more Pokemon or if we just need a game that utilizes them better. Think about it, how many Pokemon are regarded as total trash or completely eclipsed by others? Adding more while neglecting the others only exacerbates the issue. Do I think every Pokemon should be good or amazing? No, but I think every one of them should have some kind of point or purpose be they for breeding, contests, etc. which takes me to my next topic. I want the gimmicks to either stay or go away, no more temporary amazing additions like secret bases and contests just to be taken away next generation. This is why we get half baked or broken af ideas like Dynamaxing instead of building upon and improving the extracurriculars people loved. Hell, even the PSS, which worked perfectly, was replaced with even clunkier and clunkier systems. Too much development time is dedicated to getting rid of ALL the gimmicks of last gen to focus on the next one and it hurts the game as a whole. Imagine if instead of Dynamaxing S&S further improved mega evolution and z moves so they feel more balanced. Imagine if instead of 100 dens that all play out the exact same boring way we had secret base spots or something. Imagine if they had taken the Battle Frontier and put it in every game since gen 3 but with new additions and improvements. With other game series I don’t have to say “imagine if” like I have to with Pokemon and that’s sad as hell. Where other devs see what they do well and make it even better GF throws it in the trash to gamble on something new and I hope they don’t do that with Legends.

If the mechanic was balanced then it wouldn't completely ruin singles play. It's not that hard to wrap your head around. If one mechanic or addition destroys the integrity of an entire format then it's BROKEN. Period. It was CLEARLY not play tested outside of the campaign (which I'd argue also made the gyms/final tournament a joke) for singles and it shows.

Even the Pokemon Co. banned Dynamax from their official tournies partly because of how centralizing it’s been, so it isn’t only Smogon. 4th gen remake: from what I've seen, it looks like LTTP remake ideal. Graphic makeover, add some things, don't remove key ideas. For that I am excited for the games
Arceus: It has an idea that is taking advantage of 3d environment. The idea itself is good. If the region is fun, I'll be happy. But still a little cautious since it could end up bad.

Gamefreak hasn't really evolved yet. They just leveled up a bit. Pokemon Legends Arceus, although looking slightly better than Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield, doesn't look that great, especially for the largest multi-media franchise in the world. It's a step in the right direction, but a very small one. Right now, I feel like Gamefreak is just trying to copy Breath of the Wild with the Wild Area and Pokemon Legends Arceus, instead of finding Pokemon's own charm. Even Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl are just trying to be Link's Awakening. Although Pokemon games have been pretty disappointing lately, I still feel the same child-like fascination when I think of the Pokemon world. The fascination is what is missing from the latest games.

I feel like it's too little to late. Prior to SwSh, I tried my best to get the games day one. Now I'm not even sure if I'll get BDSP. I'm trying to be optimistic with the promise that Legends Arceus is showing but there are so many other things that check my optimism in the shoulder that I hesitate to be too optimistic. While they have been showing a few steps in the right direction, doing a couple steps is hard to see as progress when there have been several backtracks in the process.

I think the difference here is that this is a bigger jump than one would expect.
One of the biggest pools of the prior game was the wild area because of the itch people had about a open Pokemon game but this is that fully-realized somewhat

Honestly speaking, the footage shown so far makes me cautiously optimistic, that GF finally understood that they have to step up their game (figuratively and literally), and that SwSh was the wake-up call they needed to push the franchise to where it belongs again.

I don't think GF or Pokemon as a whole should be celebrated for doing something as basic as improving the look of a game from one announcement to another. If the series is in such a position that something as simple as making the game look better from the last time we saw it causes us to say "Game Freak is listening" then that is a massive red flag. Will BDSP and Legends be good? It's a possibility, BDSP certainly looks a lot more pleasing and in some parts actually looks like OR/AS so that's a step up but I'm not about to say that Pokemon is saved until I see some actual improvements.

I have no hopes for this. Remember how hype we all were for the last gen games. When both Gen 7 and 8 began there was a huge explosion of hype. I know people really liked 7's style. It wasn't going to be the same cookie cutter formula. We're still moving along with full realized 3D. Bigger areas. And non linear design when tackling stuff. The UB. And People (before the BBTND stuff) were really hype for a mainline console title due to scale and graphics.

All of this died because beyond the shallow coat of new paints the series employs you see the laziness. And just like dozens of reviews for Sword and Shield the end criticism was always: The idea and budding of newer more exciting things were there but the the implementation wasn't.

That's the sad thing. None of us are experts in game design but we know when the devs aren't trying. Even in Legends we still see boring landscape, bad attack animations and graphics. The anniversary games look better (by comparison) and surprise surprise game freak aren't working on them.

You're right though. This will be the first time since maybe Gen 4 that I haven't bought a Pokemon game Day 1. Its sad that the coat of paint will distract everyone before others look up and realize that paint chips away and what you have is the same lazy and stale stuff we've been ingesting for the last 20 years

I like the direction Legends Arceus is taking the franchise.
Even if the game does end up leaving much to be desired, those things it does do right will set a precedent for even more experimentation in future Pokémon games.
I'm still going to miss no national dex though but if the Pokémon selection is varied then it shouldn't be too much of an issue.
I really like the gen-mixed starters.
I hope legendaries from other generations also make an appearance.

Apparently ILCA has worked on games like Yakuza 0, Nier Automata, and Dragon Quest XI. The extent of work they did on those games is still unknown, but it's still interesting to know these people worked on these games. Brilliant diamond and shining pearl are there first big project, so I'd imagine they would want to try hard since Pokemon is there first big project.

It's still crazy to think that since the original Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon games... I haven't bought any mainline game. Not Ultra Sun/Moon, Let's Go, or Sword/Shield and its Expansion.

But damn, do the outside of games media like the recently released Pokemon Evolutions Episode 1 - The Champion and Twilight Wings (previously) made me appreciate the characters SO much... Like I will die on the "BEA is BAE " hill. Lmao. And... Leon is a very neat guy. And Evolutions really made me see him in a different way (and I think that's good)

I guess while the future isn't set in stone, I'm curious about it!

@Stella yeah agreed - Ultra Necrozma and a couple totem bosses are legit fun/challenging fights. sadly the rest of the games with Exp Share ON and overpowered Z-move nukes (especially SM where so many trainers have just one pokémon) - sadly only like 10% "harder" than XY/ORAS. again I ended up like 10-12 levels overlevelled without any grinding.

And Sega and Gamefreak are two completely different entities. Just because Sega worked and found success does not necessarily mean GameFreak will too.

I'm still salty about the lack of redesign in the remakes (characters and enviroment) and the fact that probably i wont be able to transfer my shiny petilil (or any other shiny from the gen 5-8) to my playthrough.

@GKBLUEXZYÈ Bandicoot HGSS is only overrated in comparison to non-remake games, I'll give you that. But as a remake it stands at the top. You can't overlook all the crazy amount of features they added without removing anything at all. Battle frontier, pokeathlon, pokemon following you, rematches with all 16 gym leaders with full 6 pokemon teams, voltorb flip, customizable safari zone, pokewalker, the best mystery gift events, etc. ORAS doesn't compare. I liked flying in oras, islands were neat, but it took away way too much from emerald. Just the fact it took out feature unlike HGSS proves my point. ORAS was pretty trash if you take away the glitter of superficial features

I think they've taken the absolute right path with Legends, and it's pretty hilarious to first see that trailer with jumpy visuals and that infamous 5 FPS Chingling, becoming way more of what we hoped to see from the beginning. GameFreak is clearly starting to listen to their fans, and that's highly needed at this point in time. I am so happy that we have a bit of hope for the upcoming Gen 9!

Like "Look over here!... so that you don't notice that heaping mess over there.". And then they are like "What more do you want? We did ONE thing really well! did you expect more? I know I am 2 weeks late, but I feel like the DLC on SwSh was also a step on the right direction.

See, it's a staple on the games industry nowadays to ship a game with dlcs at least planned. While that has been the case for years, Gamefreak insisted on publishing a third game, full price, for the same experience PLUS new content; or even more outrageous, in my opinion, two games (I'm looking at you, USUM).

So yeah, I feel you when you say it's a scam to get an incomplete game that will only be really complete with dlc, it sucks. But at least, in my opinion, they aren't trying to sell the same game again, promising more content or whatever. Just my two cents, not saying you are wrong, though.

I appreciate your videos, however I'm completely done with gamefreak and I have not purchased a pokemon game since Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon! There is NO reason for the games like Pokemon Sword/Shield for example to look and play like a 3ds game on a CONSOLE SYSTEM! There are games like Dragon Quest 11 and Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild that look amazing and have great controls. There are Pokemon fan games made by regular people that are WAY more creative and look better. Even old Pokemon titles like Pokemon Colosseum that are over a decade old have better animations. I also blame the PokeTubers for allowing Gamefreak and the Pokémon Company to release such lazy, outdated, lackluster products.

I VERY recently played trough Sword for the first time and I was pleasantly surprised. For example the fact that the characters are less one-notey and that the champion doesn't go "Hey random kid I met twice, go save the world!" on the contrary, they yell you to not worry an do your thing. Evolve seems kind of exaggerated, especially since all we have seen is gameplay footage and not actual gameplay nor do we know how big the world map is, the rest of the game play, mechanics, story, environment, or other stuff. I'd say having ILCA handling remakes is just GameFreak finally starting to use their brains a bit since they've been on autopilot for almost a decade.

Edit: as an aside why are they called pokemon in the Hisui region shouldn't they be referred to as monsters or creatures. Pokemon is a Portmanteau of Pocket and Monster. If Pokeballs did not exist at that time why are they still called Pokemon.

Not preordering Legends Arceus, probably gonna buy it after it comes out and see the reviews. However, this game is a step in the right direction for Pokemon and I am personally hyped for it. If they continue to innovate as they are now, Pokemon's future will look brighter than ever. The graphics are still shit though, it looks like they are trying too hard to imitate the BOTW style, but it looks worse. I personally think it would look better in Genshin Impact's style of graphics. It's cell shaded but not muddied down and looks clean. Another thing from Genshin that I think would work in an open world Pokemon game is area diversity. Genshin is full of different areas, with the most recent updates having Inazuma's islands be all different style wise. With Legends all I am seeing is wide open fields mostly, I want to see truly unique places. Like the electric cave from BW, things that match the Pokemon world. However the improvements look good and I will have high hopes for Pokemon in the future if they continue this going forward.

@Sechaba Theletsane If they released Legends in Q2 than Q1, I would agree with you more. Q1 usually comes off the heels of Q4 which is already a big spending quarter as is with the holidays, most people wouldn't be too apt to spend money during Q1 in the first place.

On the other hand, the Japanese Fiscal Year ends in March, which was why Nintendo got away with saying the Switch was a success back in the day. But to use that same logic, Legends Arceus would not only need to release in March to make the Q1 release window more viable but the merch that associates with the game would be out during the same time period.

I can't imagine though TPC making much bank in Merch from Legends Arceus as opposed to a new generation as it would be sharing most of its merch ops with the Sinnoh Remakes.

Q2, especially May and June would make perfect timing to release new merch for say Summer activities into Q3, so releasing early in April/Mid May would line up nicely if merch sales were the way to go.

@Oliver Grant you forget why the games exist. It's to sell merch (over 70% of the profit pokemon makes is from merchandise sales). Pokemon company is only concerned with one thing. Increasing money for investors. They can easily present this as a staple because now not only can they sell merch around November release, but now they can double that amount of merch sales with a yearly January release and the merch it will sell too. This will make not only investors happy but attract new ones. That's why I think the series is here to stay.

The fact that Legends is releasing in January as opposed to the typical Main series release window of November gives me the feeling it's not truly a main series but hey I've made that argument before and everyone has lauded me for it, all I'm saying is that for a main series that deals with the big creator of the land, it feels more like Legends Arceus is just a more robust Azure Flute event with a game made around it than the usual Pokémon delivery event.

@Rose Despite the things they cheaped out on in BW(2), they were probably the most passion filled games in the series, and at the time, the fanbase treated Gamefreak's probably top 3 proudest works as absolute dogwater. Why would they bother putting so much effort into a game again when their series can survive based on the brand name alone?
I'm not saying BW(2) cannot be criticised, but the hate Gen V got was much more than any other Gen before it, and was mostly unwarrented/unnecessary.

@Rose I think the devolving started with the 3DS titles, but itensified in the switch ones. the DS games were the peak of the franchise, than the 3DS ones were more poor in terms of lack of post game content and other stuff but still fun and decent games, and the switch ones just lacked in almost every aspect. Id still rather play the 3DS ones over the switch ones cause at least they got enjoyable in game experience, but SWSH and the lets go games are plain lazy, gimmicky and greedy games that should have cost half of their actual price - or better, keep the same price tag but actually give us something that worth our money and time. when I look ahead to gen 9 or whatever comes next, I really dont know what to expect anymore

TBH they've been devolving since B&W(2), it's just that those games had so much passion poured into them that you don't notice the light things they cheaped out on, like no Pokémon following you, no contests, and the underdeveloped side modes. I mean, it was more than made up for with things like PWT, the loads of secrets, the incredibly designed worlds, and the really solid plot and characters (and the fact they made ACTUAL SEQUELS TO THE GAMES,) but they were there. Still some of my favorite games of all time, but criticism is there for everything.

X&Y, while decent titles, were where their devolution really began, with lackluster design, barely any good postgame, and forgettable areas, and S&M basically set it in stone.

@Master Blade Exactly. I had to restart my progress on Sword and since I want a full dex I knew I had to play again. So I started up a storylocke, changed a lot of the canonical storyline, and holy moly I've been having so much fun.

I agree. When I first saw the controversy I was like "oh jeez this it toxic" but now in 2021 I'm like "it's a necessary evil."

great video per usual, you are one of (if not THE) fairest Pokémon reviewers/critics on youtube BY FAR. you give deserved credit where credit is due (the 2nd trailer really brought TONS of exciting new stuff) but also point out the obvious flaws (the graphics look really meh for 2021, DokeV looks like 10000% better, but Legends also looks much worse than much older BOTW and THAT is unforgivable)

I'm excited to see how it turns out, I'm mostly only excited for legends. Bdsp rubs me the wrong way but we'll see how I feel once it comes out. Legends looks great and I'm much more happy and much more open to a game having minor flaws when they decide to do something different. That's why I love unite and snap so much. My mood is lowish levels of tentative excitement. Lol

The concept sounds great, and something I really thought would be cool as a kid. While I don't play Pokémon anymore, I hope it does extremely well. But there is a lot that can go wrong.

We've ragged on GF for terrible animations for a long time, and now I LOVE the pokeball animation in Legends:Arceus. It looks so good. The way the ball jumps up and does a little flip, and then shoots off a tiny firework... it's just so good

Sword & Shield was the first mainline Pokémon game I’ve every played, and I loved it. Any entry better than that game is literally inconceivable to me. In other words, I’m very hype for Legends: Arceus.

I just hope they learned from SwSh’s controversy and evolve forward on. I’m still hopping they make a really good main game one day that not only has all of the Pokémon (like all 900) but a lot of good stuff from Legends.

It would be really awesome for Gen9 to come out in this new branch and this to become the mainline series. I guess that that's where Gamefreak's aiming but they want to test the waters before they completely dive into it. It would be nice too that they keep the working usual formula for remakes and new titles as well, but letting different studios make them in their own style every time (I'm talking about graphics and artstyle here)

1:52 I mean, yes, somebody is handling a mainline title, but it's clear they don't have any liberty and the studio is tiny one (in regards of console type projects), it's the worst scenario...

Also Arceus game might be made not just by gamefreak since there is reports (leaks from the guy that show the game an hour before the announcement) that Nintendo let one of their main studios help gamefreak with the game and that is why is looking substantially better.

To this point the only evolution gamefreak got is paying a tiny studio to do stuff not so big but instead of getting more people in their own studio they ended up getting the help of Nintendo because they press B in the hiring people move.

You think Game Freak is a small studio? Just look at the group of devs that made Xenoblade 2. SwSh had over twice the amount of active devs as Xenoblade 2. Game Freak isn't small by any metric.

Wow, DokeV somehow fell under my radar, so I thank yoy for mentioning it. That being said theres no freaking way anything on the Switch will look that good. Infact even if were just comparing aesthetics, this is more a wider Nintendo issue. Nothing but Splatoon and maybe Luigi's Mansion has that kind of energy we used to see in the PS2/Gamecube era. And its weird cause your right about the end of the trailer, Nintendo marketing and commercials still have that charm while the games they're advertising doesn't. But still, comparing to DokeV, it really just makes me want a fully explorable Inkopolis even more.

I'm excited to see these changes too, but my hype is on low-profile because of how GF likes to backpedal on quality improvements. They should at least team up with people that now their gig or they will remain the richest indie company to ever grace the globe. Not to say indie developers and their games are bad, it's just that being one of the first indie game developers to ever create something that became popular during certain era, makes one think GF couldn't age well and is hamstrung from stepping it up with how indies nowadays and with less resourcess and less staff can make awesome things with just funds from the common gamer and not from an important videogame company and investors dressed in frac.
They are -- as said -- out of date and in need to refresh their franchise with new daring ideas and people willing to make them from start to finish without caring about dead-lines scrapping unfinished content just because "muh investors".
So, yup, let GF to tag along with the real "experts" (or at least, with a more motivated bunch of developer joys under the brand of something else). It's their franchise but no longer they need to drag their feet to create something new every year. I welcome them all as long as they don't add "guns" to make pokemon more "edgier" for the audience (I'm yet traumatized by Shadow the Hedgehog's game lol). What it intrigues me though is that they drown their own franchise by giving it to... that one company that is buying everybody' else's ideas to own them and which is prone to dump the ideas into the trash if the final quarter of year gets below expectations, because that will be the real END of pokemon, franchise-wise. Will cross my fingers for them to dodge the grubby hands from that idea-munching beast.
