The Silence
Gamma Ray Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When you're drowning, when you're freezin', when you're feeling cold
There's a light in the darkness as the elder always told.
When the winter's coming closer and the autumn's passing by,
Then the world will sink in slience and I think we all should try.
Oh, I wanna live my life in a fairy tale
Where the end is always good and never sad.
Show me the way to another world
Where the sun is always shining in the and

And we fight back the tears, and we lose our fears,
Let the world remain in silence for a while
Sun in our minds in a world full of ice,
Let silence remain for a little while.

Somebody came and slammed the door,
took the feelin' away from our hearts.
And the horror took hold of a place in our hearts filled with love.

What is left behind the ice, behind the make up and the lies
Tell me what goes on inside our mindss,
There is a hole in our sky, getting bigger, growing wide
No more answer, but we hold the line - uh, yeah -
See and hear what we have done to us all,
we wanna be free more than anything,
Do you hear what I say to you?
We will make it through, the sun shall shine.

Hear the words we say and see the light of day
We never will be free until the sun is shining for us all
Carry on, carry on and make our dreams come true
And for a little while we stay together
Carry on, carry on, may all our lovin' stay

And for a little while we stay together, forever
Together, forever.

Overall Meaning

The song "The Silence" by Gamma Ray is about feeling lost and alone, but knowing that there is always hope and light to be found, even in the darkest of times. The lyrics describe the feeling of drowning or freezing and the need to find the light in the darkness, as passed down by the elders. The idea of the world sinking into silence is a metaphor for the need to slow down and appreciate the world around us while we still can. The last verse is about coming together and finding hope in each other, and the importance of making our dreams come true.

Overall, the song is about the struggle between darkness and light, and the need to persevere and find hope in the face of adversity.

I've always loved this song. I remember a "promotion meeting" with Ralf and Kai in Paris, in a big record shop where people could ask questions and I asked if The Silence was influenced by Queen and if they liked classical music... The answer was yes, and that this was a kind of tribute to early Queen (when they had such classical influences, which I loved to bits) .. Heading For Tomorrow is still my top favourite album from the band.. I loved the epic, orchestral feel of some tracks... It was also very melodic and much more varied and more subtle than what the band would do after Ralf Scheepers' departure and at the same time more cohesive than the two next ones with him,... "Heading" had more progressive and classical leanings... Ralf sang with a pretty clear vooice, much less on Sigh No More (which Im' half-hearted about). I saw them live in 1991, in Paris...
