I'm so happy
In my place
Look at the rainbow
Across my face

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Garden's song Rainbow are complex and can be interpreted in various ways, but at their core, they depict a relationship between two people who share an addiction to drugs or substance abuse. The song opens with a description of a woman named Jane, who is the eighth person in the singer's life with whom he shares this addiction. They both have a history of substance abuse, with the singer describing Jane's habit of using shades to hide her drug use. The opening line of each encounter with Jane is always the same, reflecting the repetitive nature of addiction and the singer's inability to break the cycle. Despite the destructive nature of their addiction, they seem to find solace in each other's company and in their shared experiences.

The imagery in the rest of the lyrics paints a picture of a desperate and dangerous lifestyle that accompanies drug addiction. The references to loaded guns and the rules they follow illustrate their precarious situation and the need to constantly be on guard. The references to drugs and drug paraphernalia such as straws, bags, and rocks create a vivid image of their surroundings, while the mention of shepherds and lions may symbolize the predatory nature of addiction. The lyrics also describe a car crash that the two characters use as a disguise, showing their willingness to engage in illegal activities to support their habit. Despite the danger they face, they strive for a sense of freedom and companionship in each other's company.

Overall, the song Rainbow explores the destructive nature of addiction and the complex relationships that can arise from it. The lyrics depict a sense of desperation and hopelessness, but also a glimmer of hope and companionship that the characters find in each other.

Line by Line Meaning

You're number eight. Your name is Jane, with black hair, braids, and black lines around your eyes... Shades to hide your habit. I don't know your age, though you guessed mine... My sign. Your sign! The opening line is always just the same. The same intention, destination. You and me and rainbows.
I am describing a person named Jane, who has black hair, braids, and dark circles around her eyes. She wears shades to conceal her addiction, and although I don't know her age, she knows mine and our astrological signs match. The opening line is always the same, with a shared purpose and goal between us as we journey towards rainbows.

Loaded guns attract. We know the rules, we don't react. We wait in hope, we don't expect - You and me and rainbows.
We understand that danger can be alluring, but we won't succumb to it. We patiently hope for positive outcomes without expecting them, as we continue our journey towards rainbows.

Down here everything is fine. We have a straw, we have a line. We have a bag, a rock, a mountain with a string of shepherds driving lions. Aiming skewers at the sheep... face down, asleep in onion fields. The frying fields. The worms... they peep through holes which once were eyes. They thrive... they bake although we painted out the sky and the sun. There's only thunder, and you and me and raindows.
Despite being in a dark and dangerous place, we have everything we need to survive. We have tools and companions, but we're surrounded by enemies who threaten us. We witness the horror of innocent creatures being attacked while they sleep. Even though we've lost the beauty of the sky and sunshine, we still thrive and move forward, encountering only thunder and each other on our way to rainbows.

Let's hide out in the lay-by, let the time fly by. Tonight's disguise - a car crash with our wheels like shattered stars, our dashboard charred. Our windscreen... a graveyard for the flies (we're fast!) The hungry flies are circling, mourning as the watchers squat with cameras, cakes and flasks. They're spying, spitting as the blue light flashes, axes swing. We're broken wings, but still we'll fly and we'll reach our destination - you and me and rainbows.
Let's take a break and rest for a while, blending into our surroundings. Tonight we'll pretend to have crashed our car, which is now destroyed. Our windshield holds evidence of our devastation, with flies gathering around it. Despite the attention and interference of others, including people taking pictures and trying to hurt us, we'll continue to move with broken wings and still reach our destination of rainbows.

And if we turn the lights down low and watch the sky cry through the window... Will I watch your fingers grow and stretch like butterflies? The shadows flexing, licking toes, and blinding as slowly sun sets on the same old hill. The same red glow. We're quite alone - just you and me and rainbows.
If we dim the lights and watch the nighttime sky through the window, will I see your hands grow and move gracefully like butterflies? The shadows around us seem to reach out and touch, blocking our vision as the sun sets in the distance. We're alone with just each other, experiencing the beauty of rainbows in solitude.

Everything I own is in the corner of your room. It's covered with a sheet just like it died - but I will take a broom. I'll sweep it new again, arrange it... Oh, I'll grow a dozen hands. No I never will neglect my world again. I'm safe beneath my blanket. Call it home... For you. For me... and rainbows
All of my possessions are in your room, but they are hidden away under a sheet like a forgotten memory. I will clean everything up and make it look new again, using my many hands to help. I will never neglect my things again. But because I feel safe and at home with you, I will share my possessions with you, as we both journey towards rainbows.
