Mental illness is a medical diagnosis...you would not punish someone for something they can not control...she needs a medical doctor for sure to treat her mental illness if she is truly sick...not judgement or condemnation. There are medications that can help but they don't always work. We treat every other illness with compassion why not mental illness? The brain can be ill..just like any other part of the body. What she did is wrong and no one is excusing it, but how can we prevent or at least decrease such behavior? We need to pay attention to the mental health crisis in our nation. It is a hidden epidemic and very few will acknowledge it.

Did you see above where someone knew the situation? The priest did not press charges because the girl has something similar to downs syndrome. She didn't understand. Before you say they shouldn't bring her in public remember that this is a church service. Not a key note speaker event at a hotel or a convention. A priest that allows himself to be considered a celebrity is permitting the focus to be on him rather than on the scripture or the Eucharist. Provided the priest is Catholic or orthodox, he should embrace the verse that we are to be in the world but not of the world.
