Caring Is Creepy
Garden State Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I think I'll go home and mull this over
Before I cram it down my throat
At long last it's crashed, the colossal mass
Has broken up into bits in my moat.

Lift the mattress off the floor
Walk the cramps off
Go meander in the cold
Hail to your dark skin
Hiding the fact you're dead again
Underneath the power lines seeking shade
Far above our heads are the icy heights that contain all reason

It's a luscious mix of words and tricks
That let us bet when you know we should fold
On rocks I dreamt of where we'd stepped
And the whole mess of roads we're now on.

Hold your glass up, hold it in
Never betray the way you've always known it is.
One day I'll be wondering how
I got so old just wondering how
I never got cold wearing nothing in the snow.

This is way beyond my remote concern
Of being condescending

All these squawking birds won't quit.
Building nothing, laying bricks.

Overall Meaning

The song "Caring Is Creepy" by Garden State is a mellow and introspective piece that explores the theme of personal reflection and self-discovery. The opening lyrics, "I think I'll go home and mull this over / Before I cram it down my throat," suggest a hesitation to confront difficult emotions and experiences head-on. Instead, the singer takes time to reflect and process before taking action. The following lines, "At long last it's crashed, the colossal mass / Has broken up into bits in my moat," evoke feelings of relief and release as the singer's emotional burdens are allowed to fragment and dissipate.

The song then shifts to a series of disconnected yet evocative scenes: lifting a mattress, walking off cramps, seeking shade under power lines, and contemplating the icy heights of reason. Throughout these snapshots of physical and mental landscapes, the singer seems to be searching for something undefined or intangible, perhaps a sense of purpose or meaning. The lines "It's a luscious mix of words and tricks / That let us bet when you know we should fold" highlight the paradox of human desire and ambition, our tendency to pursue things that may not ultimately bring us fulfillment or satisfaction.

The song concludes with a sense of acceptance and resignation, as the singer acknowledges the passage of time and the inevitability of aging. The final lines, "One day I'll be wondering how / I got so old just wondering how / I never got cold wearing nothing in the snow," suggest a bittersweet nostalgia for youth and the unencumbered freedom it represents. Overall, "Caring Is Creepy" is a poignant and thought-provoking meditation on the human experience.

I ended up listening to this song right now, at this moment, because of a yuri manga called "The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn't a Guy At All." And, for whatever reason, while I know this is the first *time ever I'm hearing this song, it feels like I'm just coming home to it? It just feels so wistful. And, somehow, my brain just got really quiet listening to it.
