Baby I'm a Fool
Gardot Melody Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

How was I to know that this was always
Only just a little game to you?
All the time I felt you gave your heart
I thought that I would do the same for you
Tell the truth, I think I should have
Seen it coming from a mile away
When the words you say are
Baby, I'm a fool who thinks it's cool to fall in love?
If I gave a thought to fascination
I would know it wasn't right to care
Logic doesn't seem to mind that
I am fascinated by the love affair
Still my heart would benefit from
A little tenderness from time to time, but never mind
'Cause baby, I'm a fool who thinks it's cool to fall in love

Mm-mm-mm, mm-mm-mm, mm-mm
Mm-mm-mm

Yeah

Baby, I should hold on just a moment
And be sure it's not for vanity
Look me in the eye and tell me
Love is never based upon insanity, yeah
Even when my heart is beating
Hurry up the moment's fleeting
Kiss me now, don't ask me how

'Cause baby, I'm a fool who thinks it's cool to fall

Baby, I'm a fool who thinks it's cool to fall
And I would never tell if you became a fool and fell in love

Overall Meaning

In Melody Gardot's "Baby I'm a Fool," the singer speaks of a relationship where they feel they have given their heart to someone who only saw it as a game. The singer admits that they should have seen the signs that the other person was not serious about the relationship. However, the singer is still fascinated by the love affair and wishes for a little tenderness from time to time. The chorus repeats, "Baby, I'm a fool who thinks it's cool to fall in love," emphasizing the singer's naivety and willingness to dive into love without hesitation.

The lyrics of "Baby I'm a Fool" convey a sense of vulnerability and insecurity in love. The singer's willingness to fall in love despite potential risks could be interpreted as admirable or foolish. The line, "Logic doesn't seem to mind that I am fascinated by the love affair," highlights the irrationality of love and how it can lead us to behave in ways that defy reason.

The song also touches upon the importance of communication in relationships. The singer urges their partner to look them in the eye and tell them that love is not based on insanity. The line, "Kiss me now, don't ask me how," could also suggest that sometimes words are not enough, and actions speak louder than words.

Overall, "Baby I'm a Fool" is a poignant and emotional ballad about the complexities of love and relationships.

How she’s not as big as Adele or Winehouse I have no idea. Her voice is simply magical.

I'm so glad I recently discovered Melody Gardot's music

Welcome and settle in. Definitely one of the most elegant voices of this generation and really has feeling when she sings without belting to hit the climax.

Her albums progressively show maturation and growth both lyrically and musically to the point that "Baby, I'm a Fool", as beautiful as it is, becomes less and less of a standout track.
