Medley
Garland Judy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm wearing second hand shoes
Second hand hose
All the girls hand me
Their second hand clothes
Even my pajamas when I darn 'em
Have somebody else's
Initials on 'em
Second hand rings
Mmm... second hand things
I never get what other girlies do

Once while strolling
Through the ritz a girl got my goat
She nudged her friend
And said oh look there goes
My old fur coat

I don't believe in
Frettin' and grievin'
Why mess around with strife
I never was caught out
To step and strut out
Give me the simple life
Some find a pleasant dining on pheasants
Those things roll off my comb
Just serve me tomatoes
And mashed potatoes
Any place I hang my hat is home

Oh, I got plenty o' nothin'
And nothin's plenty for me
I got no car, I got no mule
I got no misery
Don't you see
I got no lock on my door
That's okay with me
Cause the things that I prize
Like the stars in the skies are all free
I got plenty o' nothin'
And nothin's plenty for me

Once I built a railroad
Made it run,
Made it race
Against time
Once I built a railroad
Now it's done
Brother can you spare a dime?
Say don't you remember
They called me al
It was al all the time
Say don't you remember
I'm your pal
Buddy can you spare a dime?

Nobody knows you
When you're down and out
In your pocket's
Not one penny
And your friends
Well, you haven't any
Soon as you get on your feet again
Everybody
Everybody
Is your long lost friend
It's mighty strange
Without a doubt
But nobody knows you
When you're down and out

Oh every one knows
That I'm just second hand rose
From second avenue
Ya can't beat the egg-creams
From second avenue
There is more between me
And fifth avenue
Than three blocks
I tell ya
Second avenue

The flowers in spring
The robins that sing
The sun beam that shines
They're yours, they're mine

And love can come to anyone
Because the best things in life are free

Overall Meaning

The song 'Medley' by Judy Garland is a mashup of five different songs including 'Second Hand Rose', 'The Best Things in Life are Free', 'I Can't Give You Anything But Love', 'Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?', and 'Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out'. 'Second Hand Rose' which is the first song in this medley is about Judy Garland's character who is proud of her independence and resourcefulness. She brags about her ability to find value in used or second-hand things, from shoes and clothes to pajamas and rings. She is comfortable with her simple life and finds joy in everyday things, like tomatoes and mashed potatoes.

In 'Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?' which is the fourth song in the medley, Judy Garland sings about the Great Depression era and the struggles faced by people who used to have everything but are now left with nothing. The singer once had everything, including a job building railroads but now he is begging for money. The song is a poignant reminder of the devastating economic downturn of the time. 'Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out' which is the fifth and final song in the medley is about the emotional toll of losing everything. The singer is broke, friendless, and alone, but optimistic that love can come to anyone.

Overall, this medley is about overcoming struggles, finding happiness in simple things, and cherishing the things that are truly important in life.

I played the state,
The capital,
Andย peopleย said
Don't stop,
Until you play the Palace,
you haven't played the top.
For years I had it preached to me,
And drummed into my head,
Until you play the Palace,
You might as well be dead.
A team of hoofers was the headline,
At the Majestic, down in Dallas.
But they canceled the day,
Their agent called to say,
You can open the bill at the palace.
So, it became the Hall of Fame,
The Mecca of the trade.
When you had played the Palace,
You knew that you were made.
So, I hope you understand my wondrousย thrill,
'cause Vaudevilles back as the Palace,
And I'm on the bill.

Shine on
Shine on
Harvest moon
Up in the sky
I aint had no lovin
Since January
Febuary
June or July

Some of these days
Your gonna miss me honey
Some of these days
Your gonna feel so lonely
You miss my hugging
You miss my kissing
You'll miss me honey
When I'm far away

Oh my man
I love him so
He'll never know
All my life is just despaire
But i dont care
When he takes me in his arms
The world is bright alright

I dont care
I dont care
If people frown
On me
I'm happy go lucky
They say that I'm plucky
Contented and carefree,
I dont care
I dont care
If he's a clerk or just a millionare,
If im not successful
It wont be degressful
'cause I dont care.

And all around me
I hear voices that I can't ignore.
The voices of the stars
Who played the Palace long before.
The stars who entertained you,
Until the rafters rang.
You dont need there names
For the whole world acclaims them
For the wonderful songs they sang.
Theres Eddie Canter,
Georgie Jessle,
Louie Holts,
Johnson and olson.
Cowerson boys,
Howerdson boys
Aand that singing fool Al Jolson.
And so with deep humility,
I stand in front of you
I'm proud to play the palace,
It's like a dream come true,
Which is why I'd like to shout it up and down.
Just to tell Broadway
That the two a day is back in town.

Judy embodied music and humanity all by herself. Divine genius beyond recognition !

More than half a century from his passing and still unequalled!

Terry Hammond

It was probably a year before Judy died, when she came into the Penthouse Club called The Top Of The Town in the Shelton Towers Hotel, in New York City, where I was performing at the piano. Judy got up and sang with me for 2 hours. She stood right next to me and kept her small hand on my shoulder the entire time. I can still see it as clear as day... even the Mickey Mouse watch she was wearing. It was an unforgettable moment in my life...performing with the greatest of the Great. Wow!

Terry Smith

Judy didn't have little hands, she had big hands. Slim hands, long slender fingers. I work with hands everyday, plus you can see how long her fingers are when she sings.

Terry Hammond was that the hotel where Basin Street East was, and with the big long pools and the bowling alleys?

Terry H., you THINK it was a year before she died. How on earth do you not remember the date of what had to be the most thrilling experience of your life. I'm awful at remembering dates. But, that date would have been burned into my brain for eternity. I would have gotten her autograph and dated it. With all due respect, I question your story. Although, I hope it's true, what a great memory that has to be.
