He started out in the mid-1980s deejaying on various sound systems and even recording the occasional track under the moniker "Little Bimbo". By the first part of the 90s, his locks had grown out and he went from deejay to singer, changing his name to Garnett Silk.
Silk was born Garnett Daymon Smith (2 April, 1966) in the Brumalia district of Mandeville, Jamaica. He was taken under the wing of Rasta deejay Tony Rebel and introduced to Sugar Minott's Youthman Promotion sound system, which had a hand in recruiting many young acts who later became international stars.
Along with Rebel, Silk reintroduced Rastafarianism into a dancehall scene which by 1992 had become nearly overwrought with X-rated and violent lyrics. He burst on the scene recording many hit tunes and albums, including "Nothing Can Divide Us", "It's Growing" and "100% Silk".
Tragically a fire at his mother's house on 9 December 1994 killed both Garnett and his mother (with Garnett first escaping then giving up his own life trying to save his mother's). The Jamaican reggae scene was shocked by his death and it is a testament to his talent and his amazing voice that his music is still selling worldwide today, possibly stronger now than it did before his untimely demise.

While I pray for my blessings to rise (Woh-woh)
Listen
Dem belly full but they're starving
Have a lot an still wanting
Jah without you we're empty
Fill us up with your mercy
Have a lot an still wanting
Jah without you we're empty
Fill us up with your mercy
Man shall not live
By bread alone (and I know)
But by the words
That proceeding from Jah, Jah
Man shall not live
By bread alone (and I know)
But by the words
That proceeding from Jah, Jah
Dem belly full but they're starving
Have a lot an still wanting
Jah without you we're empty
Fill us up with your mercy
Never
Leave us
Alone
Cant you see the way is dark
And we cant make it on our own
I'm kind of happy but till morning
They're looking on but not seeing
They're born with sight and lacking vision
Oh Lord, how I pray for their salvation
Belly full but they're starving
Have a lot an still wanting
Jah without we're empty
Fill us up with your mercy
Belly full but they're starving
Have a lot an still wanting
Jah without you we're empty
Fill us up with your mercy
Cant you see
Its Jah we need
And without him
We can't succeed
He's my friend
In times of need
Thank you, Jah
'Cause you revealed
Dem belly full but they're starving
Have a lot an still wanting
Jah without you we're empty
Fill us up with your mercy
Dem belly full but they're starving
Have a lot an still wanting
Jah without you we're empty
Fill us up with your mercy
Man shall not live
By bread alone (and I know)
But by the words
That proceeding from Jah, Jah
Man shall not live
By bread alone (I know)
But by the words
That proceeding from Jah, Jah
Dem belly full but they're starving
Have a lot an still wanting
Jah without you we're empty
Fill us up with your mercy
Dem belly full but they're starving
Have a lot an still wanting
Jah without you we're empty
Fill us up with your mercy
The song "With Your Mercy" by Garnett Silk is a heartfelt reggae tune about the emptiness that one can experience without the presence of God in their life. Through the repeated phrase "Dem belly full but they're starving, have a lot and still wanting", Silk conveys the idea that material wealth does not necessarily equate to true fulfillment. Instead, he seeks to fill the void in his life with Jah's mercy, invoking the biblical phrase "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by the words that proceeding from Jah". He asks for the Lord's guidance in times of darkness and expresses his gratitude for the revelation of Jah's presence in his life.
Additionally, Silk highlights the struggles of those around him who are also searching for meaning in their lives. He sees that despite having sight, they lack vision and he prays for their salvation. Through this song, Silk shows his belief that true satisfaction can only be achieved through a relationship with God, using his smooth voice and heartfelt lyrics to convey this message.
