Discovered by Luc Plamondon singing American blues tunes in small Sherbrooke bars, he was drafted by Plamondon to play the role of Quasimodo in his musical Notre-Dame de Paris, making him a star. After the musical, he managed to launch a successful international pop music career in Quebec, France, and many other European countries. His looks and hoarse voice, as well as the virility that he combines with a boyish niceness, brought many to see him as a major modern day sex symbol.
Gitan

Je rêvais enfant
De vivre libre comme un gitan
Je voyais des plages
De sable noir
Où couraient des chevaux sauvages
Les sentiers secrets
Des montagnes d'Espagne
Gitan
Quand plus tard
J'apprenais mes premiers accords de guitare
Sur la route je partais sans bagages
En rêvant
D'autres paysages
The song "Gitan" by Garou is an ode to the artist's dream of living life as a gypsy. The opening lines express his childhood dreams of living freely like a gypsy, with visions of black sand beaches and wild horses. He even drew secret paths through the mountains of Spain in his notebooks. Later, as he learned to play guitar, Garou hit the road with only his instrument, dreaming of other landscapes where he could follow the journey of the wandering people in caravans, accompanied by the sound of Gypsy violins.
Garou sings of the desire to live life on his own terms, unfettered by any rules or laws, with a thirst for freedom and the music that is intrinsic to the essence of a Gypsy. He speaks of following his heart, falling in love with one person at a time and living a life free of the constraints of modern society. Despite his life of eternal exile in the concrete jungle, the singer happily claims his identity as a Gypsy and pledges to continue following his dreams for the rest of his life.
Overall, "Gitan" is a nostalgic homage to a lifestyle and a people who have traditionally lived in the margins of society, yet have managed to maintain their unique culture and voice.

Garou, greetings to you from Ukraine!
My name is Emma. I am 22 years old.
If you ever get a chance to read this, I want to say thank you for being one of the biggest inspiration of my life.
When I was 12, my grandmother and I used to listen to "Belle". And my grandmother used to say you were a professional.😊 When I was 13, I started listening to other of your songs.
And I was really impressed by the way you played Quasimodo. By the way you got into the role...
I have never been to your concert, but I really hope to come one day!
Your music makes me feel really happy!
And you have so beautiful heart and soul!!!
I sincerely wish happiness to you and your daugther, from all of my heart!!!❤🙏🏻

MERCI GAROU
@nobodyunknown2777
@mouette558

I never get tired of listening to this song. It's one of my favourites of all time. The orchestration in this live performance is beautifully done, and Garou is as excellent as ever. Nobody else on Earth has a voice like his.
