The Fire
Garrett Kato Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You and I used to dance to the moon
With no shoes on, whistling a tune
Singing like these Rolling Stones
And all this don't seem like the way it was
You're all dressed up, calling for the cab to drive
You home

But those nights were long
And you felt like leaving the fire
It was burning and I kept on thinking
Like dust in the wind I didn't see it coming
So we were running because they were waiting the train
Still rolling, are you lost in the night
But honey, you still roll your eyes
I love it when you roll those eyes

And this all might sound just a little too heavy
We're taking this border to nod instead
But we are out there on our own
Far from the land of the lies and thieves
We'll make our way down back to the valley
Where we'll flow downstream

But those nights were long
And you felt like leaving the fire
It was burning and I kept on thinking
Like dust in the wind I didn't see it coming
So we were running because they were waiting the train
Still rolling, are you lost in the night
But honey, you still roll your eyes
I love it when you roll those eyes
I love it when you don't act surprised

Oh oh oh. ah ah ah

And those nights were long
And you felt like leaving the fire
It was burning and I kept on thinking
Like dust in the wind I didn't see it coming
So we were running because they were waiting the train
Still rolling, are you lost in the night
But honey, you still roll your eyes
I love it when you roll those eyes

I love it when you don't act surprised
And I think we'll make it through the night

Overall Meaning

The songwriter in Garrett Kato's song The Fire reminisces about a time when he and a loved one would dance under the moon with no shoes on and sing like the Rolling Stones. However, now that love seems to have changed as the loved one is all dressed up and calling for a cab to drive her home. The songwriter thinks back to the long nights they spent together, feeling captivated by the fire they had built, but she seemed like she was ready to leave. The song is about the distance that has been created, both literally and emotionally, between the two.

The songwriter describes how their relationship used to be, but he now believes that they have taken different paths and are "out there on our own, far from the land of the lies and thieves." He believes they will make their way back to the valley where they'll flow downstream. The lyrics are about the hope he holds onto that they will rekindle their love and that they will make it through their stormy past.

Kato's running metaphors are evocative, highlighting the difficulties and uncertainties of love's journey. As we run headfirst into someone, we might not realize before it's too late that at the end of the track, there's something else waiting for us. The song is emotional, with its nostalgic and hopeful tone truly showing through as Kato sings about the harsh reality that relationships can be difficult.
