Unanswered Prayers
Garth Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Just the other night at a hometown football game
My wife and I ran into my old high school flame
And as I introduced them the past came back to me
And I couldn't help but think of the way things used to be

She was the one that I'd wanted for all times
And each night I'd spend prayin' that God would make her mine
And if he'd only grant me this wish I wished back then
I'd never ask for anything again

Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayers
Remember when you're talkin' to the man upstairs
That just because he doesn't answer doesn't mean he don't care
Some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers

She wasn't quite the angel that I remembered in my dreams
And I could tell that time had changed me
In her eyes too it seemed
We tried to talk about the old days
There wasn't much we could recall
I guess the Lord knows what he's doin' after all

And as she walked away and I looked at my wife
And then and there I thanked the good Lord
For the gifts in my life

Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayers
Remember when you're talkin' to the man upstairs
That just because he doesn't answer doesn't mean he don't care
Some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered

Some of God's greatest gifts are all too often unanswered
Some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers

Overall Meaning

Garth Brooks' song "Unanswered Prayers" tells the story of a man who runs into his old high school flame at a hometown football game. He reminisces about how he used to pray every night for God to make her his, thinking she was the one he wanted for all times. As he talks to her, however, he realizes that time has changed both of them and she wasn't the angel he remembered in his dreams. In the end, he comes to the realization that sometimes unanswered prayers end up being the greatest gift God could have given him, as he is now married to the love of his life.

The song carries a message of hope and faith in God, reminding listeners that just because their prayers are not answered does not mean that God doesn't care. Sometimes the things we want the most are not what we actually need or what is best for us. The man in the song realizes that his prayers for his old flame were not what he truly needed, and he is thankful for the gifts that he now has in his life.

Overall, "Unanswered Prayers" is a song about the power of hindsight and understanding that life has a way of working out for the best. Whatever our prayers may be, we should trust in God's plan for our lives and have faith that he knows what we need, even if we don't.
