Brooks was a phenomenal musical force in the 1990s. He had his chart breakthrough in 1989, having come apparently from nowhere, and was an immediate commercial success. Lacking the tall and lanky physical appearance typical of some male country stars, he successfully integrated pop and rock elements into his recordings and live performances. He soon began to dominate the country singles and country albums charts and quickly crossed over into the mainstream pop arena, selling records like no one else in country music ever had and exposing country music to a larger audience than previously thought possible.
Brooks enjoyed one of the most successful careers in popular music history, with over 70 hit singles and 15 charted albums to his credit and over 115 million albums sold in the US alone, breaking records for both sales and concert attendance throughout the 1990s. Possibly dissatisfied and looking to expand his career boundaries, he then attempted an artistically ambitious (but uncompleted) multimedia project involving a fictitious alter ego.
Troubled by the conflicts between career and family, the year after the decade ended Garth Brooks announced his retirement from recording and performing, thereby disappearing from the music world as suddenly as he had come.
Recently he has announced his return to live performances by agreeing to a 5 year 15 show a year contract in Vegas. His plan is to finish this contract, write some new stuff, and wait for his youngest daughter to go off to school, and then he plans to return to touring with his wife.

And I look for the light through the pourin' rain
You know, that's a game, that I hate to lose
I'm feelin' the strain, ain't it a shame
Give me the beat boys and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away
Give me the beat boys and free my soul
Beginin' to think, that I'm wastin' time
And I don't understand the things I do
The world outside looks so unkind
And I'm countin' on you, to carry me through
Give me the beat boys and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away
Give me the beat boys and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away
And when my mind is free
You know your melody can move me
And when I'm feelin' blue
The guitars come on through to soothe me
Thanks for the joy you've given me
I want you to know I believe in your song
And rhythm, and rhyme, and harmony
You helped me along, you're makin' me strong
Give me the beat boys and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away
Give me the beat boys and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away
Give me the beat boys and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away
Take me, oh take me
The lyrics of Garth Brooks's Drift Away convey a sense of confusion and frustration, as the singer struggles to make sense of his place in the world. He feels weighed down by the daily grind and the struggles of life, but finds solace and escape in music. The chorus, with its repeated refrain of “Give me the beat boys and free my soul / I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away,” is a plea for release and liberation from the everyday struggles of life.
The song also touches on the power of music to move us and to heal us. The singer finds that when his mind is free, the melody of the music can move him and soothe him. He expresses gratitude to the musicians and songwriters who have helped him along the way, and acknowledges that their work has made him stronger.
Overall, the lyrics of Drift Away suggest that music has the power to transport us beyond our daily struggles, to lift us up and free our souls. By tapping into this power, we can find hope, peace, and joy even in the darkest of times.

"Drift Away" is a classic rock song originally written and recorded by John Henry Kurtz in 1972. It has been covered by numerous artists over the years, but one of the most popular versions is by Uncle Kracker.
Uncle Kracker's version of "Drift Away" was released in 2003 as a single from his album "No Stranger to Shame". The song features a smooth, laid-back melody and Uncle Kracker's signature raspy vocals. It quickly became a hit, reaching the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and earning a gold certification from the RIAA.
The song's message of wanting to escape the stresses of life and just "drift away" has resonated with listeners for decades. Its catchy chorus and memorable lyrics make it a favorite for sing-alongs and easy listening radio stations.
Despite the success of "Drift Away", Uncle Kracker has stated in interviews that he never intended to become a solo artist. He was originally a DJ for Kid Rock's band, but started writing his own music during downtime on tour. "Drift Away" was just one of the songs he recorded and it ended up launching his solo career.
The song has been covered by many other artists over the years, including Dobie Gray, who originally recorded it in 1973, and Rod Stewart. It has also been featured in several movies and TV shows, such as "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle" and "Scrubs".
Overall, "Drift Away" has become a timeless classic that continues to be enjoyed by music fans of all ages.

My buddy, Richie, passed away last Thursday, after his battle with Pancreatic cancer. I hadn’t seen him, face to face, in many years, but I talked to him, on the phone, every week. Every time we talked, he talked about coming out to California-to see the Redwoods with the wife and I. I mistakenly thought we had more time. Never take a moment, for granted, as you’re never promised tomorrow. I miss you, brother. I’ll see you, when I get there. ❤️ Tank

My Uncles got a month to live with pancreatic cancer. He's like a father to me. The realisation of how long forever is daunting to me. I just hope when he goes, I wont forget the sound of his voice or many of my favourite memories of him.
