When My Train Pulls In
GaryClarkJr Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everyday nothing seems to change
Everywhere I go I keep seeing the same old things
And I can't take it no more
I would leave this town
But I, I ain't got no where else to go now

Wake up in the morning to more bad news
And I sometimes I feel like I was born to lose
It's driving me out of my mind

Gonna catch the next train
And I move on down the line

But I'll be ready now
I'll be ready when my train pulls in
Well I'll be ready now
I'll be ready when my train pulls in

I know my time ain't long
And I can't live this life again

Walking down the street you might wanna cross a smiling face
But they'll stab you in the back as soon as you turn, walk away
Oh Lord, it's bringing me down, yeah
If things don't change around here
Ain't no use in my hanging 'round

But I'll be ready now
I'll be ready when my train pulls in
But I'll be ready now, yeah, yeah
I'll be ready when my train pulls in

I know my time ain't long
And I, I can't live this life again, oh no

Overall Meaning

Gary Clark Jr's "When My Train Pulls In" is a song about the frustrations of feeling trapped and stagnant in life. The first verse sets the scene for the feeling of monotony - every day feels the same, and he can't escape the same old things he keeps seeing. The singer wants to leave but feels stuck, with nowhere else to go. The second verse takes a darker turn, with the singer waking up to bad news and feeling like they were "born to lose". It's all becoming too much – he's being driven out of his mind.

The chorus reveals the singer's plan to escape, to catch the next train and move on down the line. He'll be ready when his train pulls in, and his time ain't long – he can't live this life again. The final verse touches on the theme of betrayal – even a smiling face might be hiding something dark, ready to stab you in the back. The singer resolves that if things don't change, there's no use in hanging around. The song ends with a repetition of the chorus, representing a glimmer of hope for the singer and the possibility of escape: he'll be ready when his train pulls in.

In summary, "When My Train Pulls In" is a song that conveys the feeling of being trapped and the desire for escape. The singer is tired of the monotony and setbacks life keeps throwing at him, and he wants to move on to something better.

This song summed up my life for the last 5 years. It gave me the drive to change my situation for the better. My train pulled in I got on it and moved 1500 miles and left the only place I'd known for most of my life.
