They gone hold you down
But they can’t take your crown
What will you do now
Don’t get lost up in the crowd
They gone hold you down
But they can’t take your crown
They gone hold you down
But they can’t take your crown
What will you do now
Don’t get lost up in the crowd
They gone hold you down
But they can’t take your crown
Why you claiming you popping
Nigga just stop it
Niggas all think that I lost it naw I just stopped to go get a deposit
I burst through the door with the swiftness
Ain’t hear a word like I was a locksmith
You say you gonna pop shit
I heard you took off like a rocket
You claim your team is real but
They gone hold you down
Cause all your team is clowns
I tried to teach you better but you kicked me when I’m down
I’m trynna find my crown
So I can lead my town
I can see all of these different things
(And I know you can’t)
God give me strength to do anything
(But you don’t know bout that)
I need my clarity and some peace
(Aye, Aye)
I need some piles of all that green and some platinum plaques
Stacks on Stacks
My niggas is acrobats the way that we flipping these racks
It's facts you cap
I promise just chill relax you know that I’ll blow off these tracks
Get back get back
I’m feeling like captain jack don’t play cause you will get smacked
They lack they lack
What you got don’t hold back
Just focused on goals it’ll happen
They gone hold you down
But they can’t take your crown
What will you do now
Don’t get lost up in the crowd
They gone hold you down
But they can’t take your crown
They gone hold you down
But they can’t take your crown
What will you do now
Don’t get lost up in the crowd
They gone hold you down
But they can’t take your crown
I’m finna blow
You chasing these hoes
You niggas is hating cause I chase my goals
While they move in slow mo.
I promise that I tried to teach you the ropes
But you is a joke
I gotta go and just leave you alone
Cause I’m in my zone
Gotta make sure that I’m building my home
Gasoline is my cologne
You know that I’m faded I’m gone
You all look the same are you clones
I feel like I’m bout to go rogue
I want to just travel the globe
But all of these people just think I’m a foe
Because of some hoe shit that I really can’t even control
They bombing these niggas they bomb back
Why the fuck are you blasting
They killing these people it’s tragic
Fake stories appear like its magic
But fuck it I need me a bad bitch and a pint of that lean to stay active
Naw nigga that bean got you actin
I can see it through your screen you an actor
I can teach you to sing if you askin
I can teach you to dream if you have it
I can teach you bout how to go bag up the green and to keep your hands clean if you bout it
I can teach you be quiet when niggas is shouting cause it’s the weakest that’s loudest
But it’s on you to climb over these mountains stop making excuses about it
Bitch
They gone hold you down
But they can’t take your crown
What will you do now
Don’t get lost up in the crowd
They gone hold you down
But they can’t take your crown
They gone hold you down
But they can’t take your crown
What will you do now
Don’t get lost up in the crowd

They gone hold you down
But they can’t take your crown

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Gary Bird & the G.B. Experience's song 'The Crown' speak to the struggles of maintaining personal sovereignty in a world that seeks to keep individuals in line. The repeated phrase “they gone hold you down but they can't take your crown” refers to the powers that be, who may try to control you, but ultimately cannot take away your individual sovereignty and worth. The lyricist is urging listeners not to get lost in the crowd, meaning not to succumb to societal pressure to conform and instead stay true to oneself. The song speaks to the experience of being misunderstood by others, who may think you've lost your way, while in fact, you're simply trying to achieve success on your own terms.

The lyrics are also critical of those who seek popularity for popularity sake, belittling their efforts as mere clout-chasing. The lyricist speaks of trying to teach others how to succeed properly and in line with their values but ultimately feeling let down when these lessons are not taken to heart. There is a sense of frustration that comes through in the lyrics of the song, with the lyricist trying to break through to those who continue to hold themselves back.

I'm a 67 year old white dude, who got married for the first time at age 60. I tracked down the 12" extended single of this and had the DJ at our wedding reception play it. Yes - it's an incredibly life-affirming and positive message that EVERYONE should hear. Our friends and guests were a mix of white, Caribbean, Hispanic, Asian, and African-American folks. EVERYONE loved it.
