Ebb Tide
Gary John Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Then rolls out to sea and the sea is very still once more
So I rush to your side like the oncoming tide
With one burning thought, will your arms open wide?
At last face to face, and as we kiss through an embrace
I can tell, I can feel you are love, you are real
Really mine in the rain, in the dark, in the sun
Like the tide at its ebb I'm at peace in the web of your arms
First the tide rushes in, plants a kiss on the shore
Then rolls out to sea and the sea is very still once more
So I rush to your side like the oncoming tide
With one burning thought, will your arms open wide?
At last face to face, and as we kiss through an embrace
I can tell, I can feel you are love, you are real
Really mine in the rain, in the dark, in the sun
Like the tide at its ebb I'm at peace in the web of your arms
The lyrics of Gary John's song Ebb Tide metaphorically describes the feeling of being desperately in love with someone, and the journey one takes to be embraced by that person. The song equates the rush of the tide to the urgency of the singer to be with the person they love. The opening line, "First the tide rushes in, plants a kiss on the shore," describes the way the water from the ocean comes up to the shore and kisses it, similar to the singer who rushes towards their beloved. The next line, "Then rolls out to sea and the sea is very still once more" signifies the stillness that comes after being with someone you love.
The chorus repeats the idea of rushing towards their love, with the line "So I rush to your side like the oncoming tide" and the burning question of "Will your arms open wide?" which sets up the idea of the embrace. Finally, when the singer is embraced by their love, they express a sense of completion and peace with lines like "I can tell, I can feel you are love, you are real" and the comparison of being in their arms to being "at peace in the web of your arms."
Overall, the lyrics of Ebb Tide paint a picture of the deep longing and yearning for someone that often accompanies falling in love. The metaphor of the ocean's tide establishes a sense of urgency and the feeling of being pulled towards someone, while the final lines convey a sense of completeness and fulfillment.

Having worked in the movie industry for most of my life (now retired), this is truly the most wonderful and glorious cover of this song I have EVER heard! He sang in several movies and appeared on television countless times. He was one of Johnny Carson's most favorite singers....he IS my most favorite male vocalist of all!! Thank you for posting this song, just wonderful!

Anyone who KNOWS music and voice at all would have extreme difficulty in expressing disagreement. Nevertheless, thank you.

Well at least you presented your opinion as your opinion, and not one that everyone should agree with.
