Falling Awake
Gary Jules Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Eagle in the dark
Feathers in the pages
Monkeys in my heart
Are rattling their cages

Found a way to blue
Another ghost to follow
Said "it's only up to you"
And that's the hardest pill to swallow

Mmm hmm hmm

You never get to choose
You live on what they sent you
And you know they're gonna use
The things you love against you

One foot in the grave
One foot in the shower
There's never time to save
You're paying by the hour

And that's just the way it goes
Falling awake
And that's just the way it goes

Slipping through the bars
Aware of the danger
Of riding in the cars
Taking candy from strangers

And it's never out of hand
Never out of pocket
I'm supersonic man
Do you wanna buy a rocket?

Hmm, and that's just the way it goes
Falling awake, falling awake, hmm
Oh and that's just the way it goes
Falling awake, falling awake

Eagle in the dark
Feathers in the pages
Monkeys in my heart
Are rattling their cages
I could learn to play the game
Could learn to run the hustle

If I only had the brains
The money or the muscle

Overall Meaning

The song "Falling Awake" by Gary Jules is a contemplative piece about the struggles of life and one's own inner demons. The opening lyrics, "Eagle in the dark, feathers in the pages, monkeys in my heart are rattling their cages," suggest a struggle within oneself, as different parts of oneself are at odds with each other. The mention of the eagle and feathers may symbolize a desire for freedom and lightness, while the monkeys in the heart represent a noise and chaos within.

Jules sings about feeling lost and searching for direction in life, as he sings "found a way to blue, another ghost to follow." The line "it's only up to you" suggests that despite external circumstances, a person's own choices and actions are what will determine their future. However, this realization can be painful, as Jules describes it as "the hardest pill to swallow."

The song also touches on the idea that in life, we often do not have control over what is sent our way, and that sometimes the things we love can be used against us. Jules sings, "You never get to choose, you live on what they sent you, and you know they're gonna use the things you love against you." This can be a difficult truth to accept, as it suggests that there is often no way to predict or control how our circumstances will affect us.

Overall, "Falling Awake" is a reflective and deeply personal song that explores themes of struggle, self-discovery, and the difficult truths of life.

I remember listening to this song a decade ago as a freshly graduated high school student.
I still use many lines of this song in everyday conversation. One of my favourite songs of all time, and I love sharing it to people, even if they forget about it not too long after. Which is good, because I can share it once more.
