Gary Jules attended The Bishop's School in La Jolla, California. Some of his early projects/bands were The Ivory Knights, Our Town Pansies, Woodenfish and The Origin.
Jules started off his solo recording career with the debut Greetings from the Side. Originally released by A & M, this album slipped through the cracks due to neglect on the label's part, and Jules was dropped. In 2001, together with friend Michael Andrews, Gary Jules recorded Trading Snakeoil For Wolftickets. It was from this album that the remake of Tears for Fears' Mad World was subsequently used by Michael Andrews for Donnie Darko.
In December 2003, two years after Donnie Darko was released, Mad World finally reached the charts and became the Christmas Number One in the UK. In early 2004, the song surfaced in the US and Canada.
His most recent album, simply titled Gary Jules was released in 2006. The song Falling Awake from this album was recently used in the season 3 episode Six Days: Part Two of Grey's Anatomy.

Push
Gary Jules Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
By choice anymore
Don't you know no one rides for free
Don't you know there's nothing
That's just pretty like before
Or so you keep telling me
The ocean ain't breaking
No, the killer sleeps cold
We run through the veins of the city
Borrowed cars and frozen shoes
We do as we're told
Over and over and over again
Can't make a circle
So end over end we go
Come away from the window
The dogs will appear
I've seen them around
And now, as the head turns to hear
You speak with passion
You know me so well
Why should I build
It's so easy to sell
Push
Push
It's never just a little
It's never enough
It's never enough
The lyrics to Gary Jules's song "Push" speak of the bleak reality of life in a city where nobody chooses to live, and everything looks hopeless. The opening line "Don't you know nobody lives here/By choice anymore" sets the tone for the rest of the song, where the repeated refrain "Push" seems symbolically to urge the listeners to keep going despite the odds.
The second verse highlights the pervasive sense of danger lurking beneath the surface of city life. The reference to the "killer" sleeping cold recalls the threat of violence and crime found in urban environments. The image of "borrowed cars and frozen shoes" suggests a transient and precarious existence, as people struggle to survive by doing what they're told.
The third verse features a moment of defiance, as the singer defies the expectations of those around them to pursue their own goals. The line "Why should I build/It's so easy to sell" suggests a rejection of the rat race mentality, and a refusal to accept the status quo.
Overall, the song seems to be a commentary on the challenges of modern urban life, urging listeners to keep fighting even when things seem hopeless.
