Friday on My Mind
Gary Moore Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Monday mornin' feels so bad
Ev'rybody seems to nag me
Comin' Tuesday I feel better
Even my old man looks good
Wed'sday just don't go
Thursday goes too slow
I've got Friday on my mind
Gonna have fun in the city
Be with my girl, she's so pretty
She looks fine tonight
She is out of sight to me
Tonight I'll spend my bread, tonight
I'll lose my head, tonight
I've got to get to night
Monday I'll have Friday on my mind

Do the five day grind once more
I know of nothin' else that bugs me
More than workin' for the rich man
Hey! I'll change that scene one day
Today I might be mad, tomorrow I'll be glad
'Cause I'll have Friday on my mind

Gonna have fun in the city
Be with my girl, she's so pretty
She looks fine tonight.
She is out of sight to me
Tonight I'll spend my bread, tonight
I'll lose my head, tonight

I've got to get to night
Monday I'll have Friday on my mind

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Gary Moore's "Friday on My Mind" can be interpreted as a commentary on the monotony and drudgery of the workweek, and the longing for escape and release from the daily grind. The singer describes the various days of the week, and how they affect his mood, with Monday being the worst, and Friday being the best. He dreams of spending time with his girlfriend and having fun in the city, and looks forward to losing himself in the frivolity of the weekend. In this sense, the song can be seen as a celebration of youthful rebellion and a rejection of conformity.

The lyrics also touch on themes of class struggle and social injustice. The singer expresses his frustration at working for the rich man, and his desire to change the scene one day. The repetition of the phrase "I know of nothin' else that bugs me" highlights the pervasive sense of dissatisfaction and alienation that can come with living in a capitalist society, where work is often seen as a necessary evil rather than a fulfilling pursuit. Overall, "Friday on My Mind" is a catchy and energetic anthem that captures the spirit of restless youth and the desire for freedom.

Love this song, I bought the vinyl single back in 1987 when I was 13, it's still a rockin' song 🎸🎼🥁

I still remember when I first heart this song in 1987. I was on holiday in South-Tirol (Italy) with some juvenile groups (age 14-16) and we stayed in some kind of hostel. The girls there were afraid of ghosts/demons, due to ouija board seances.

One day we went to a local village ceremony. I have had the biggest back pack and was asked to borrow it to a guy. In my back pack fitted about 7-8 beer mugs. The next day before the dinner, the childminder told us, that the people from the village ceremony are missing several beer mugs, if we know anything about this ;-)!? After the guy gave me my back pack back, it smelled all over after beer :-(! This was the first and last time of such a action!

We also have drunk a lot of beer and somehow two sleeping room doors got damaged. One day we drove to the Lake Garda with a travel bus. One of the childminder arrived one week later at the hostel. He was also in the travel bus on that day. In the evening we wanted to drive back to our hostel, but this little dumb childminder does not show up at the bus on time. So the other two childminders searched for him about half a hour without luck. So we drove back to the hostel without waiting any longer for him. Later in the night he was brought back of two carabineri officers in a car. He told us, that he got lost at Lake Garda and later was picked up by the carabinerei officers. After this incident he was sent back to Germany.
