Purple Haze
Gary Moore Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Purple Haze was in my brain,
Lately things don't seem the same,
Actin' funny but I don't know why
'Scuse me while I kiss the sky.

Purple Haze all around,
Don't know if I'm coming up or down.
Am I happy or in misery?
Whatever it is, that girl put a spell on me.

Purple Haze was in my eyes,
Don't know if it's day or night,

You've got me blowing, blowing my mind
Is it tomorrow or just the end of time?

Overall Meaning

Gary Moore's song "Purple Haze" is a tribute to the love drug, LSD. The color purple was often associated with LSD, and "haze" is a term used to describe the feeling of being "high." The first verse refers to the effects of the drug and the feeling of being disorientated and not knowing what's going on. "Lately things don't seem the same" is a reference to the altered perception that comes with taking LSD. The line "Actin' funny but I don't know why" suggests that the singer is experiencing physical changes and doesn't understand why.

In the chorus, the singer is trying to make sense of their altered state. They don't know if they're happy or miserable, but they know that the drug has had a profound effect on them. They are unsure of their surroundings and don't know if they are coming up or down. The line "Whatever it is, that girl put a spell on me" suggests that the singer may have taken LSD with a romantic partner and has been swept away by the experience.

In the final verse, the singer's senses are overwhelmed by the drug. The color purple is now in their eyes, and they've lost all sense of time. "You've got me blowing, blowing my mind" describes how the drug has blown the singer's mind and senses. The final line, "Is it tomorrow or just the end of time?" suggests that the singer is experiencing a profound sense of unreality and does not know what the future holds.

Many great guitarists have come and gone, but Gary's versatility, expressiveness, and diverse body of work remain unrivaled. The man played so many different styles with total commitment and mastery--blues, hard rock/metal, Celtic rock, etc. He inspired legions of hard rock/metal guitarists, yet he could also sing a blues ballad like "Still Got the Blues for You" in a way that Clapton never could. Remarkably, his singing was equally as powerful as his guitar-playing. A rarity, indeed.

On the one hand great show, on the other hand you can only see it if you's also dead. And I'd much rather be alive.
